Microscope 500x good enough for fecal?

100x for counting
400-500x for identifying.

Not sure the point though. Its gonna be eggs or no eggs, you do not have the skill to identify which species. Trust me if a trained 1st-2nd year vet tech cant do it, no way i would trust the diagnostic of a self taught hobbyist.

On the other hand its nice to sleep at night knowing at least nothing was there :)

I think you are better off doing mail order or the local vet. Some do it for as low as $15. The 2 around me do it for 10-20 bucks if they have seen the animal in question before.

Thank you. Unfortunately, around me, there are no vets that don't charge a ridiculous amount for basic tests and I only want to take animals' fecals to them if something looks fishy. Not every few months for all of them. I can afford to do so, but do I need to do so that way? I also occasionally take in a rescued critter and wouldn't mind having the ability to screen them for at least basic parasites.

Seems like a lot of people here on the forums do them. I just wanted to make sure that the microscope I was looking at was good enough. I'd love to buy a giant Celestron but do I NEED to? I am a simple creature. I also don't want a giant microscope as a focal decorative piece either. I also want to use it for parasite checking for my mother's budding African Violet business so it will have multiple uses.

There is this awesome video that breaks it down and provides links to supplies:

There's also this website that provides supplies for at least reference:

Honestly, I am curious if something like this would woyk:

I do my own fecal floats, and I wouldn't now if this would work. You need to understand that their would is like ours it's 3D. I find when you do a fecal you have to focus on several different levels to see it. Not sure if this would do that as accurate, or at all. It is also way easer if you have an adjustable slide table. It would be a real pain to see what is going on if you had to manually move the slide. You can pick up a nice microscope on E bay cheaper than Beautiful Dragons sell them, but then again the money you spend there does go to a good cause. Here is the one I chose.
