Metal wire cage?

I have an old chipmunk cage that was used as Lily's (my first cham) outdoor cage. I am thinking that it would make a brilliant cage for Monty if I covered the back and the top half of the sides in plastic, as the whole thing has a plastic tray that it sits on. I could then raise this and create an easy drainage system underneath. As ar as I know, the cage is 'galvanised' but the type of metal I am not sure of. It has been washed plenty of times and doesn't rust. It would be super easy to fix branches and vines into as well! Anyone have experience of using this type of cage?

If its galvanized then its ok to use. If it held up under your chipmunks tinkle and did not rot then its safe against acid rain even. lol

Well, it actually housed sugar gliders at some point after originally being used for chipmunks. I presume it's galvanised, it looks like it but obviously is old and more 'weathered' looking than new. I just wondered if the metal would be an issue.

you could take it outside and rinse it off and leave it out in the sun. if it turns brown and rusts then its not galvanized or aluminum and unsafe to user. But I have seen several cages online where ppl have used non rubberized wire for an enclosure like this if it is galvanized.

It has been washed and left in the sun to dry many times in the last 10 years and shows no signs of rust, so I reckon it's safe then! Now to get Monty big enough to go in there! It is 18" x 18" x 36" iirc.
