Mesh - blocking light

Hi all,

I am radically upgrading my enclosure for my veiled chameleon - with a lot of help from you guys, thanks for that! I bought a new light setup, however I was wondering if the mesh I have on my enclosure is blocking too much?

See the attached photo, it is my index finger (i don't have big hands)... I am considering using 1/4" mesh instead..

Galvanized on top is best due to heat lamps. Plastic is no good for that part. Great for the sides though.

He meant the enamel coated wire mesh which is fine with the heat from the lamps.

On the other hand Galvanized is poision, which is why folks usually suggest against using it for reptiles.

Especially for use with heat lamps. When Zinc plating (galvanized) is heated it produces Zinc fumes which are super toxic. So even worse.

Go with Stainless, Alu, or Coated.

Where do you get the coated hardware mesh at. May have to alter my new cages top screen. I want 1/4" squares for better light transfer and only style I've found is galvanized ..?

How many cages are you making? I have seen the 1/4 with a black enamel, it's actually made and sold for reptile cages, but you have to buy a pretty large roll so it is a tad pricey.

I'll have to find it again tommorow. It's online though, not something you will find in home Depot ect.

Edit: looks like a diffrent company is selling a commercial version now in smaller amounts.

The PVC ones have their own issues, as you said with heat as well. This stuff is enamal coated with a baked on enamel it will resist the heat, solve the zinc issues, and is 1/4 :).

You saw my new cage thread, doing 4 total but only the top is metal mesh. The front is the black pvc style mesh. So I need enough for 4 tops at 32x22. I feel like to stole this thread but I'm sure the outcome will help OP also.

I didn't see how many you were going to do though.

I updated my post with a link :). It's 3ft x 25ft commercial version, last time I found that stuff it was 3x250ft rolls and was like 150, but the link above is 3x25 for 26 bucks. That's a steal, looks to be the same material. Obviously your paying more than the large rolls per foot, but these guys seem to be selling smaller amount which the other company (who also made it) wouldn't do.

The company that made it also had SS wire mesh in 1/4 as well, and Alu too. Expensive though. They made this animal one for reptiles specifically, they mentioned the design was originally for snakes, and could handle very hot lights above.

They said it was a bake on enamel so like engine paint, very durable and very heat resistant.

uhmmm

Thanks for making that clear. I was speaking of the enamel coating. Good info
