measuring uvb output

I am using Zilla Slim Line tropical 18 inch with a 25 uvb that comes with it. I recently did reading on all of my chameleon cages with a Solarmeter and it ranged from 7-18 (from a foot way) over the 4 different cages that I have. Does anyone have any idea what the output should be? The one that read 18 is my newest light and the one that read 7 is my oldest light. Thanks for the help :)

Take this as an anecdotal answer based on reading some studies and the results of my animals.

In the case of Panthers/Veilds, I shoot for a high, basking spot of 40 µW/cm². They should also be able to get less by using lower basking spots as well as shade from plants and such.

Now, if you are talking about 'montane' type species that live in denser foliage, I would say be a bit more cautious.

For example, my Parsons have access to one spot at that level, but they use it sparingly whereas the panthers may sit there for hours.

HTH,

How far away from your bulb were you measuring? If I get really close to my light it goes into the 100's, I got the low ratings from 12 inches away because I read that that is the standard for measuring. Thanks for the reply

There is no standard for measuring really. You want to measure where your chams will be. So for example, I set up my 'UV basking spot' where he can get the 40ish max if he needs it, and then set up the other branches below that. I raise or lower the lights to get this number.

SPecific to me, I am using Arcadia t5 6% UV bulbs, so my bulbs are around 5" from the top of the screen cage.

Your mileage will vary depending on bulb type and such.

If you cannot raise or lower the lights, start at the top of the enclosure with your meter and go lower till you find that sweet spot, put a branch there, and so on.
