Maybe a stupid question

Is there somewhere where I can find out what some of the more common acronyms mean? I feel a bit lost sometimes. I tried to use the search but I didn't find any information. Can I get some help?

Faly? CH? etc.

Good question !! Not sure if there's an actual website for that but you could always ask in the post about something like that. Faly is a locale Panther chameleon and CH means captive hatched. Anything else I could answer while were on this subject :)?

Faly is a type of panther chameleon. There are a few more locales. You'll catch up with those :p I kinda had to...
CB or CH- captive bred, captive hatched meaning they were raised as "actual" pets, as many people would say. They are not caught from the wild
WC- wild caught
Don't know if you knew this, but if someone has in their signature: 2.3.1 chams, it means they have (in order) 2 males, 3 females, and some people will include their chams with undetermined genders, which would be 1, in that example.
Hope those few helped :) there are a few more

Some of the more common panther locales are:
- Nosy faly
- Nosy be
- Ambilobe
- Ambanja
- Sambava
- Nosy mitsio
- Ankarami
Etc. There are many more but I think you see these in the pet trade the most often, with some being more popular than others.

WC - An animal caught from the wild
CH - Captive hatched. Usually the mother was WC and laid the eggs in captivity.
CB - Captive bred.

MBD - Metabolic bone disorder/disease
IR/URI - Respiratory infection/upper respiratory infection

That's all I can think of right now lol There's probably more.

Thank you all for your answers! I know some forums I have been on have a sticky with the abbreviations and meanings so I didn't know if I was missing the lingo post somewhere. Those were the main two. I had heard of Nosy be but never Nosy faly.

Is a faly and a Nosey faly the same thing?

Yes they are the same :)

yeah youll figure it all out over time, context is how i learned.

if you look at classifieds or breeders pages you'll get a better idea of what each panther locale looks like and differences amongst other species.

for instance if its described as montane that species is going to more than likely require cooler basking and ambient temperatures as well as higher humidity.

with WC (wild caught) youre going to want to see if they were treated for parasites otherwise youll probably going to have to do that yourself

thats why its always good to buy CB

if you see F1 or F2 ect, that denotes how many generations out of the wild. for example, you purchase a female WC and she lays a clutch of eggs, not only are they CH but they are F1 their offspring will subsequently be F2.

this is important for people who are doing fairly large scale breeding projects or someone who just want to introduce a little bit more diversity into the captive breeding populations.

youll also see people using scientific names and common names alternatively. i say tomato you say tomoto. its the same thing. a Meller's and a melleri are the same thing. a Jackson's and jacksonii are the same, just as subspecies jacksonii x. and xantholophus are the same thing (although jacksons most commonly are xantholophus)

starting to get confusing? you just have to ask for clarification
