Matcha's first fecal float- what are these?

Hey guys, I did Matcha's first fecal float today. It was also my first time doing one!

Here are some things I saw. A few look like air bubbles, one is possibly an egg of some sort, another is seemingly coccidia.

Sorry for the quality- it is the best I can do at the moment. If it is a bit too blurry, stand back from your computer and look and they should be more focused. I wanted close ones as not to leave out details. Most of these are at 400x, some are the next view down (100x?)

Let me know what you think! Thanks!

Yea looks like coccidia. But maybe someone else can confirm.

Which ones? I think the first ones do. The next few with really solid borders (one round, one long) look like air bubbles to me and the last set look like some sort of egg (trichanoma? what is that little triangular thing in the middle of it?)

pics 4-8 looks like cociddia 1-3 are not really clear enough for me to make a guess but may be cociddia

Edit : my question was answered in your post.

To be honest most of them do but the 4th to the last looks to be the best. The first 4 are just not in focus. Did you see any worms because sometimes it can be difficult to distinguish between worm eggs and coccidia. Maybe Dave Weldon or Dr. Wheelock will confirm.

This is so lame. Looks like I will be needing some Ponazuril.

Dave will post his opinion later, I hope. :(

The magnification of each slide photo is very critical to identification. Not knowing exactly which ones are 100x and which are 400x is a problem. If you could identify the mag of each photo, that would help.

In a float you will get archaic items (bits of digested feeder) and plant matter. You will get random debris trapped in air bubbles and in water bubbles.

In your photos I see possible coccidia, and possible roundworm or pinworm, but would need to know magnification.

Were these clearer in person? In a slide there will be a lot of coccidia-looking junk. But real coccidia shows up very clearly. It won't be a guess or a judgement call. You'll know. At least, when you view the slide in person you will. Same with pinworm and roundworm.

I agree. PM Dave Weldon and have him take a look. He's done slides for so many people that he's seen a lot of stuff.

I am sure that I saw coccidia. I am not great with a camera and they were clearer in person. I don't think that I have roundworm- he has been treated with panacur in the last four weeks (once a week for four weeks is what I do- he had his last treatment last week)

I will try to get photos again. I will have to wait for a fresh sample.

that does look like a coccidia to me as well.
and I second Gesang's opinion on pinworm.

Did you finally manage to get the steamer?
I guess good thing you purchase it, huh?
With a steam blast of 275 F and Ponazuril, I think you have nothing to worry about anymore.

How would he have pinworm after being treated with Panacur? I mean, I will treat him again, but can it be resistant?

Howdy Nikki,

Sorry that last night's PM was so short. I was dashing out the door to the SBCK meeting :). Now I'm dashing out the door to a customer meeting this morning :o. I re-processed (color, brightness, contrast, size [all the easy stuff in Photoshop]) one of your images to get a different view of it. It does look like coccidia but where there's one there's usually more to find and you'll be able to get a better shot of them. I'll be able to spend more time tonight when I get back. Try another float and also play around with the microscope and camera settings. We need to chat some more about using the microscope :). I don't have them ready to look at but there are camera software controls to adjust brightness and contrast and I think white balance too, that will help with the image quality. If you crop a photo you also need to keep it's image size setting small otherwise it'll look too magnified. "You can't see the forest for the trees." :( (Now I'm late .)

You should try to confirm it with your vet. But, if it is pinworm, it could be that there are some live eggs released already in the enclosure and the soil. Or, you just need to scrub the cage harder (or steam more) and don't use the plants anymore for his environment.
I would be more inclined to believe your chameleon got reinfected.
There certainly possibility of resistant worms. But, i doubt it.
