Maggie Gurl's Place Phase 2

Phase One was the aquarium etc; and thanks to the info from you guys & gals, I am ready to save for Phase 3!

It's a DIYcages.com cage with LLLReptile 3 light fixture w flor-RS5.0, incandescent daylight bulb and red night/heat light. (I know that some don't think well of the night light. But she sleeps so hard I could shoot a gun next to the cage and she'd never crack a lid...) Her basking bulb is at the back with a couple of fake vines running across where she can bask as she likes. I use one of the hand pump misters and it really works fine. And it kind of forces me to take the time with her and watch her drink. She where she love the damn thing. She drinks, then gets into the mist and lierally bathes! Since I have to hold the valve open, I get to "participate". I'd love a automatic system (Phase 3), but maybe not at the expense of time with her. I fill the bottle with warm water and mist around for, at least, 5 to 7 minutes. I mist 20 oz at least once a day.

I drilled four holes in the bottom of the cage and placed a Sterlite plastic drawer unit with four identical holes drilled into the top of it and aligned with a screw. The runoff goes to the removable drawer underneath and I pour it into the Ficus next to the cage. Its not IN the cage because none of the places have much choice. I took a shot and it was too tall. It's almost Hibiscus time, though...

She eats like a pig. Crickets or mealworms. Prefers crickets. (Yes, dusted) If I could only solve the keeping crickets alive problem. Even with the Fluker orange squares and the green gel, I still lose more than a lot. In cricket keeper, etc. Seems like crickets lately suck. Petsmart manager said that they're losing 900 out of 2K in a shipment...

Anyway, here's some pics of her and her home...

Thanks for the help, through your contributions to the forums. Y'all are great!

Petsmart/petco crickets suck. Crickets also seem to live longer when I feed them fresh veggies (as you should be for gutloading!) mealworms offer very little nutrition and can cause impaction in the chameleon, superworms are generally better.

veileds can handle temps down into the 50s so unless your house drops that low at night, she doesn't need any heat at night. If it does, a ceramic heater or space heater would be better.

Great looking cage and what are you keeping your crickets in there might not be enough air flow. I would as pssh said try some fruits and veggies (orange, collard greens, mustard greens, endive, apples, kale, ect).

I don't see a laying bin and with females, there should always be one. Do you plan on putting one in? Otherwise, it looks great!

What's that bottle on the top left--a dripper?

A "Lizar'd Mister" manual pump mister/dripper.

As far as a laying bin, she's not even three months old. Is that young enough to lay eggs? And what if I DON'T want her to lay? Is that bad and should I set it up anyway?

And I have been feeding her superworms. She went nuts on them at first, but backed off a bit. No impaction that I can see with her. She has enough "compost" that I scrape it up and use it for fertilizer in the Pothos plant. Plant seems to LOVE it!

I may start mail ordering insects... The local pet shop has crap. Ants and strange bugs in with the crickets...

And Pssh... red light OUT! ;)

Yeah, if you read the raising kitty the veiled blog it has a section about females and stuff. The bin should always be in there just in case though. It would suck if you didn't have it and she needed it.

Most likely even if you order crickets you're gonna get a couple of those strange catepillar things in with your order. Just wanted to brag I've still got some petsmart crickets alive that I got 3 weeks ago, I'm amazed!

I buy my crix at PetsMart and they are always clean and live long. The store is very neat and they do not have a lot of reptiles, which I like. I think it depends on the store mgr, location, etc. The Petco in my area is the opposite and I don't shop there.
