Macro ring flash suggestions for Cannon 65mm

Any thoughts? I can't justify spending $500 for a ring flash but if I go over 2x i am always going to have a shadow unless I flood the subject with light from above or the side. There has to be a cheaper alternative that will allow a flash for this macro lens. Thanks in advance!

Howdy Brian,

Here's a thread on the "Photography-on-the.net" Canon photography forum (another addicting forum site ) titled: "Show Us Your Macro Rig". There are over 700 posts under that thread with tons of photos of macro rigs to give you ideas on how to skip the purchase of the expensive Canon macro flash.

By the way, once you sign-up for this forum and have something like 30 posts(?), you can participate in the "For Sale" area. There are lots of flashes being offered at any one time. I've got the Canon 580EXII flash, Canon 430EX flash, Yongnuo YN560 flash, and 4 of the RF-603C wireless flash triggers :). I'm having fun with portrait shots and other interesting captures :).

The YN560 flashes can be found new for as low as ~$64 each! I got the new 4 wireless triggers all for $64 total!!

I have the Canon T2i body and the 100mm f/2.8L macro lens among others.

Happy shooting,
Dave

Hey Dave, nice to hear from you! Thanks for the information. Thats exactly what I was looking for.

Try experimenting with an led flashlight?

I tried that but its a PIA to position an external light and take pictures of the chams in the cages. Its a 2 man operation. I could get an uplight panel for taking macro shots that are just laid flat on a desk but I want to be able to do handheld shots so a ring flash is the best option
