Looking for Canadian Breeders

Hey all,
I'm fairly new to this forum, but I've been considering Chameleons for over 2 years now. I'm now ready to take the plunge, *but* I'm looking for a Carpet Cham. Not the easiest to find anywhere, much less in Canada, much less cb. I did contact one breeder, but they had no luck with their two females. Any breeders out there? I would consider another of the smaller species, but I would have to do the research to learn more about it. Does any of his make sense? Maybe Chams can be shipped from the States here, but somehow I don't think so.

You guys are the best -- very knowledgable, and fun! I've got your forums up as my homepage.

Hi Lisa,

Check your PMs. I am sending you a link to vendor who sometimes has in, and can definitely order some wc carpets.

Port Credit had five males and one female when I was there a few weeks ago. They were all WC.

Ok, opinions then. Are wc too much for someone new to Chams? Wc usually have parasites afaik. Trouble acclimating too. Anything else? I hadn't really done the research in this area b/c I intended to go with cb.

WC chameleons are not a good choice when first getting into chameleons. They usually have parasites and/or worms. Every chameleon that I have purchased from Port Credit did have parasites or worms of some sort. They do require more care and need to be fairly healthy before starting them on meds. If a WC cham is not doing well and you try administering meds, it may not survive.

I would recommend you to try another species, WC are a little bit more challenging, and could need a few visits to the vet to make sure they are OK, also, there is a good chance they have parasites, which means you might have to run fecal exams, medicate for a few days, and re-test. All this process could be frustrating and I would avoided if you can find CB animals.

Not to mention that vet visits, parasite testing and meds are not cheap.

Thanks for the info. I definitely don't want to be dealing with wc then. We don't have the greatest reptile vet around here anyways.

Can you recommend a smallish species that's easier to obtain?

Lisa,

Welcome to the forum! Captive Bred (CB) Panthers and Veileds will be the easiest to find. You also may be able to get some Captive Hatched (CH) Chams which are eggs hatched from Wild Caught (WC) Chams. CH do not have parasites, and some are offered by FLChams, call Mike. Also, there are some Spiny Chameleons from Tiki Tiki in the forum classifieds that possibly would be a good choice. If you buy from the US, be sure your shipper knows his process, and you will be OK.:D

Thanks Nick. Unfortunately Panthers and Veileds are too large for me to keep right now. That will change, but not for several years. I'll try the US breeders and see what they say about shipping to Canada, and I'll do some research on the Spinys and see if we're compatible. Folks here have given me a great start.
