CONTINUE TO BE SOCIAL. that stick might be the threat if he bites it only hurts for a little bit lol. once you get past biting and he realizes your not going anywhere after being bit he will eventually quit using that tactic lol

I'm gonna hang around here for a bit and see what people tell you.. I'm having the same problem with our rescue veiled..

He's so mean, I really don't think he likes me very much.

Awesome!!!

Awesome that you saved him.
Awesome that he is doing so well.
Awesome is how he looks.
How bout naming him Awesome?

He is definitely an impressive looking gent and lucky to have you.

As far as the aggression goes, don't show him fear. You are bigger than him and he is just trying to scare you off and defend himself and his space. He has been through god only knows what... Someday hopefully he will come to understand that you are not out to hurt him. Give him time--be patient and take it slow.

Let him bite a few times like Preachap says. Just make sure it is a full bite where he doesn't just pinch skin but gets a mouthful preferably across both sides of his jawbone. You may bleed a bit but hopefully you won't need stitches (the chance of which increases if he just gets skin and pulls it) but he will see that he has no reason to defend himself from you after time, HOPEFULLY.

The last rescue I helped with was also very aggressive but is much better now. Still gets hissy and threatens sometimes but finally gave up biting after about a month of me getting bit everyday when we had to put his medicine on him.LOL I would just let him bite and then he would back up against me between my arm and chest where he knew nothing was gonna come at him from behind and he would calm down. After he was calmer, then we would put his antibiotic on, let him wander some on us and put him back in his house.

Good luck!

thanks! all i know is that he was bought from the local pet store when he was small by a woman as a present for her very YOUNG granddaughter. then she didn't want him and gave him to some guy. he didn't like him, then gave him to the previous owner. the last guy just gave him to the local pert store and said he was tired of having to feed him every week
(which makes me feel like he was fed maybe once a week) well the guy who owns the pet store has been turned in for animal abuse multiple times and the girl that works there is like a modern day animal robin hood. she calls people and finds homes for animals and has even reported the owner herself. she help us in the rescue of him and multiple other animals. so this little guy started life in a crummy pet store. went through 3 crummy homes in the same small cage, and then ended up back at the same pet store :(

You can't. Or at least you shouldn't

Just look at it this way -- you have a tough guy!

Would you ever let King Kong tame you if he put you in a cage?

That said, I'll give you one hint -- food.

well. i think he is really a sweet guy underneath. hes just scared bc he hasnt had good experiences with humans. after all. the last humans kept him in a small cage. fed him way too little, and instead of a heat bulb had a regular light bulb

What do you mean by "Regular light bulb" ? That's what I use for my chameleons for heat, it does the job perfectly.

I second the name being awesome.. he is absolutly awesome looking

Poor guy has had a tough life. Give him lots of time and he should calm down some. But, don't let him intimidate you either. When you are in his cage cleaning and stuff, do just that and leave him alone awhile.

Then, start out by offering him a worm from your hand. Just offer it. If he takes it fine, if not put it in his dish or on a branch and try again next time. Then he will learn to associate your hand and you to food instead of as an invasion and threat.

If you do HAVE TO handle him, reach in below him and from the front as much as possible. And move slowly. Don't jerk around and pull away and scream. That just tells him his intimidation is working. That is if you have to. Otherwise, let him take the time to learn that he is in a better home and that you are a good thing to have around. Remember it may take a while and handling is just stressing him out and re-enforcing his idea that hands and people are not that good to have around.

one of those spiral light bulbs. i thought it would be ok but when its on it barely makes any heat or light. we put our extra lights on his new cage and hes loving it. he was kept with little or no humidity, heat, he had no climbing area, no room to move, no food, in five days hes already gotten bigger and his skin looks better. he stays up by the lights all the time. has eaten so much food, and he was shaking when we first got him like he was to weak to move but has stopped that

Ah, you mean a CFL bulb (Compact florescent). Those barely generate heat.

I also suspect those compact fluorescents emit something weird. I have a little Peacock (yes, there's a sciencey name) and they really do not need extra heat where I am, but I wanted him to have something that looked like the sun...plus it's sort of cool to be able to see them in their cages. So I tried a CFL thinking, "hey...no added heat". But he really stayed away from it. He started hiding in the shaded areas, so I took it out and replaced it with a 25w incandescent...now he hangs around in the lighted areas.

Was it a cool white bulb? Maybe try a warm bulb? Could be a spectrum thing...

the cfl, compact fluorescents, coil bulbs have lead to blindness in some chams. just spreading the heard word. I was recently informed that unless I changed my setup I would have my order cancelled. you better believe I changed it up

i have a very mean veiled, hes been that way since day one. I just let him be himself lol he tries to bit me every time i try to even get near him. A few tricks iv learned is keep your hand flat so there's no where he can really get a hold of you even if he does strike at you. Second distract him with one hand more at eye level and then use you other hand to pick him up from underneath mine is usually so distracted by hissing at the one hand he doesn't even notice the one picking him up lol and once hes on it, its no longer a threat just something hes standing on. And third as others have said if he does get a hold of you dont pull your hand away, not only does this show that your not intimidated, but since their teeth are like small serrated type teeth they probably wont break skin unless u pull your skin across them. Then they can really cut.
