Hi,

has anybody long term success besides Julirs with keeping different pygmy species in aquariums with screen tops ? I have nearly a douzen of big aquariums which are all empty.
I'm search espacially for experiences with viridis, spinosus, acuminatus, ulugurensis, beraduccii, moyeri and temporalis

Best regards and thanks
Benny

Hey Benny,

I know those who have had great success in aquaria, but I personally have had much better luck keeping them singly in small screen terraria. In fact, my spinosus has been living in such an enclosure without problems, and thriving.

Cheers!

How do you keep yours? I think i have some eggs in my converted aquarium (need to go hunting) and i want to keep the babies separate and am open to new ideas.

*I have been keeping mine for 6 months with no problems so far*

Hm, interesting. Ill give that a try with some of the babies, i have an extra 16x16x30. How do you keep the dirt from falling through the screen at the bottom? a plastic liner?

I have a aquarium with a computer fan that blows air over the top of the enclosure for 15 minutes every 2 hours to help with circulation. I notice that my male will hang from the ceiling hen the fan is on...maybe that is his way of telling me he likes it more!

Benny,

I've kept B. perarmata for 3.5 years, B. ebenaui for 4 years, B. stumpffi for 3 years, B. thieli for 2 years and Rh. temporalis for 2.5 years in aquariums with screen tops. All were WC adults when I acquired them. I now use the Exo-Terra/ZooMed terrariums with the venting under the doors in the front for my Rh. spinosus, Rh. acuminatus, Rh. viridis and B. stumpffi.

There isn't so much dirt. The problem with such terrariums is that they are really expensive in comparison to those aquariums.

@Chris how high were your tanks for them ? My highest empty aquariums are 50 cm and without a computer cooler it would be hard to get a good air circulation

The tallest were 43cm tall. The only fan I used was an oscillating fan in the room.

I was planning on that, but my other cages block it and i cant put the fan anywhere else...

When i saw fan blowing into the cage, i dont mean right down into it. The fan is mounted on the wall that is 6 inches away from the tank and blows across the top. Just enough to get the leaves on the plants moving.
