Live Plants - Vanilla Planifolia Vine

Hey all,

I picked up some Vanilla Planifolia Orchid Vine at the Reptile Super Show in Pamona, CA this weekend. From what I've researched, it seems to be one of the best vines a person can get for climbing existing sticks in the a terrarium and seems to be a pretty good looking plant.

I'm not exactly how to plant it, care for it, etc. I've seen different methods of growing it online, and planting the vine cuttings that I bought at the Supershow, however, I haven't been able to find anything online about uses in terrariums. My concerns are over/underwatering mostly (Mistking water system).

Is there anyone out there that has experience with this plant?

Thanks,

Kelsey

Hi there

I have not worked with this species yet. However if you pot this plant in a pot that has enough room for root growth and provide lighting for enough photosynthesis for healthy stem, flower and leaf growth you should be OK. Did you run a search to double check to make certain the plants leaf, stems and flowers are not toxic. If you plan to use it for a plant eating chameleon (Veileds) that is a concern.

Good Luck

Thanks for the reply. I've got Panther's, so I'm not overly concerned about plant toxicity. I'm just having a horrible time getting vines to grow in my terrariums. Apparently I know much more about Cham's than I do about plants, lol.

I dont know about Vanilla Planifolia... but if its an orchid...
as far as I know they need special substrate and care... (they cant be on regular soil)
I know much about another kind of orchids.... the phalaenopsis...
this kind of orchid needs a mixture of bark and moss, and needs to be watered once a week, and must be well drained. it also needs much light (no direct sun) and lots of ventilation...
You should go online and take a deep look on internet to find out more about proper care of your vanilla planifolia, that way you can keep it nice and healthy.
Im looking at it online and it doest looks great and beautiful!
nice buy :)

Yeah, I've read that also. But I've also read that it's pretty hardy and you can almost put it right on top of the soil and it's external roots take care of everything. Thanks for your response!

Believe me, if this thing does what I think it will do, I will be spreading the word to all chameleon enthusiasts!

Great!
I hope it works!!
it does looks beautiful!!!!
I wish I could get one =/ .. but its really unusual to find exotic plants down here where I live... (mexico)
So.. I have to stick to the common ones
