soo, i gently coaxed linus onto my hand and took him out, which ive done a few times, but never kept him out, and decided to let him chill and maybe he'd get curious and explore, so i put him on my lap while i sat on my futon and browsed facebook on my laptop in front of me on a chair, and he took an interest and started climbing my laptop and got halfway up the side of the screen somehow and lost grip and fell onto the keyboard, then he got upset and livened up and WOULD NOT stop crawling, he seriously made 6 laps down my leg and right onto my hand so i could bring him back up, he was insane! so i finally got him to calm down and put him back, haha. is there anything i can do besides a free range to make him enjoy coming out? i actually put my hand inside the crix bin when he first came out and he was soo nervous about being on my hand, he didnt do anything. enjoy some pix

i hope i didnt stress him out too bad..after i put him back, he crawled to the bottom and chilled for a few minutes, and is now making his way back up. i think he drinks down there, even tho theres drainage holes, the water still makes a little puddle occasionally i catch him down there, i dont like it, but i figured he knows whats best for himself as long as i provide it. right? also, he has been opening his mouth while basking, i know this means its too hot, but his basking spot is only about 80...

Linus is looking great! No ideas on how to make him willingly come out more. But how are you measuring the temp of his basking spot? IR gun? Or a gauge/probe? Difference is, IR will measure surface temps(which is what you want to know), vs gauges/probes actually measure the ambient air temperatures(still important). If your ambient air says its 80 surface temps could actually be in the 90s to 100s. This is not always true but could be the issue with the gaping. Have you noticed any stringy saliva or crackling sounds?

Edit*** You could also raise his basking lamp a little bit to lower the basking temps to see if he will stop the gaping

the gauge in his cage says 80, and i use a digital thermometer which usually reads around there, sometimes above, and sometimes below..but my step dad is head of maintenance at the local courthouse and says he will bring home their super expensive IR gun for me to use i didnt realize there was a difference, ill move the lamp a few inches and see if that helps

Well the way it looks your over all temp is 80? Raising the light should do the trick. If its a thermal imaging gun your dad brings home youll be like woooaaahhhh... theyre awesome, i use them at work. Im gonna post some pics showing temperature gradients in a cage as soon as i can get one home.
