lighting question again.

I found a fixture for my 24 inch bulb, but it is a 18 watt fixture and the bulb is 20 watts. it has not blown out yet.

my question is will the fixture wattage diminish the amount of uvb if its 2 watts lower then the bulb.

You are overdrive the lamp... The lamp you have is a T8? and the fixture is most likely a T12. This isn't a good idea. In a normal house lamp it might not matter... because you just want light from the lamp. BUT with the UVB tube you could be making too much UVB or too little or... who knows. I do know you are over powering the lamp and it isn't good for the tube.

I would return the fixture and buy the correct one.

no, the bulb is t8 and the fixture is t8. they don't make a fixture at home depot or lowes that's over 18 watts and holds a 24 inch bulb.

all 24 inch fixtures are 18 watts and lower. even the aquarium hood lights are a lower wattage. the reptisun 24 inch is 20 watts also. so either I go out and get an 18 bulb again, or I just wait and see if the bulb blows.

I can't return the fixture, because it was a direct wire, so I had to install a plug. I already tampered with the fixture. I will say that I think the repti glo 5.0 is 18 watts., but I heard if I use reptiglo brand that I need to use either the 10.0 or the 8.0. The reptiglo 8.0 uvb output is equivelent to the repisun 5.0 uvb output.

Or am I missing something? I am just trying to understand because it doesn't make sense that the lamp would be diff than what we can find in stores. Unless you have a lamp that isn't meant for US consumption.

i went to wal mart. bought a 7dollar 24 inch "under cabinet" light fixture. stuck a 24 inch reptisun in it and bam! reptile lighting. its worked for a long time and i have had no problems healthwise or light wise. i did however cut out a section of the plastic for the uv to get through. and i put some aluminium duct tape inside of the makshift hood to reflect more light down. works great. and cant beat the price.

no i modified it. cut that stuff the heck up and made a decent looking hood.

the fixture I just purchased has nothing blocking the bulb. its like using a regular hood. my worry was the fixture wattage being 18 watts and the bulb being 20 watts.
