I know this is strange, but Gizzy goes to the toilet in the same place each day then promptly does a runner into the greenery before re-emerging seconds later and returing to her basking spot. Is there a reason for this behaviour ? it does seem like quite a funny thing to do.
might be instinct, in nature they are more vulnerable during defacation. maybe a dash off into cover? who knows, mine will go poo from his basking spot then run and hide in fake plants for a few. then back to basking spot. i just thought he was weird, seems he is more normal after all.
my cham poops on one lone branch then rubs himself in the dense foliage in the back. i just figured it was natural behavior when they go out in the open and then go to hide.
You are lucky, or perhaps unlucky , enough to actually see your chameleon defecate. I have yet to even see mine defecate, much less what behaviors she exhibits afterwards. By the sound of it, the chameleon is trying to hide from predators after such exposure. The smell and sight of chameleon droppings would be a sign to predators, like vine snakes, which feed on chameleons, that their favorite prey is near. Running and hiding far away from the droppings would be the best defence.
I've only seen mine poop 2 or 3 times, he doesn't seem to be too shy about it but I have noticed that he's always on the move immediately after going. Its a funny thing to see, he kind of hangs his one leg out over the branch and squats down
Lily always lifts her tail out of the way first and sometimes she lifts one leg too!! When I see her with her tail up, I know what's coming next - she only ever has her tail in that position while she's pooping!! When she's finished she walks away while wiping her vent on the vine!! Usually she comes to the front of the cage to come out after - like she's saying 'It stinks in here let me out!' The other day I saw her eyes bulging a bit, then I saw her rear end position and realised what she was doing!!
Gizzy is certainly not shy by any means, in fact i`m sure she waits until i`m sat beside her Perhaps it`s pay back for the constant misting that she dislikes so much.
Lily produced a monster poop earlier!! She hadn't been since laying her first clutch on 23rd December so I knew that she was due one! She looks thinner now! The poor umbrella tree that I gave her for Christmas got the lot! Took me ages to get it all out from between the leaves at the bottom! I had to remove the plant and give it a good wash too!!
