So....thanks to the perfect Chicago weather right now, I've had all the chams outside all weekend. On Saturday while the Melleri were in their big tree outside, I thought I saw Fria (who I could have sworn was an older female) mating with Newbie, whom some of you are familiar with from other threads (she laid 74 eggs at the end of June). I took a double-take and then ran to get my camera. I figured I spooked them because by the time I came back, they had separated. WELL.... not too long after they went back outside a little bit ago, Fria went right over to Newbie, Newbie "assumed the position" and Fria was trying her (um, "his") damdest to get on top of Newbie but the branches just weren't cooperating. Brings new meaning to "Labor Day".
They have since separated but are continuing to flap at each other. I have not taken any pictures yet because I didn't want to disturb them.
For the record, these two have both been increasingly wandersome the last few days, and quite possibly to get at each other. I never connected the dots because I always assumed that Fria was a female. I have had Fria about 2.5 years and Newbie for 2 years and they have been around each other for 2 years but they never made an attempt to mate during that time (although they did flap at each other a few times...). Hhhhmmm. I guess I need to change Fria's name to Frio....
