Kent's First Baby Panther in 6 Years

Last year Chris @ Clean Line and I traded wild caught female panthers of different locale-types. The female I received was already gravid when I got her and laid a small clutch of 15 eggs in late May. Two of those eggs died almost immediately. The rest of the eggs have all looked excellent until current. Unfortunately several days ago one of them dented in some. I pinch tested the vermiculite and found it very dry and so added some water. This would have been Friday afternoon. I didn't feel like messing with it the day after the Pomona show and so left the dented egg until yesterday when I opened it. All I found was that disappointing cheesy stuff. :( I couldn't believe such a good looking egg went full term and that was it. Gave me that sinking feeling about the rest of the clutch. I even told Chris about it this morning.

A couple hours later I went home to feed, water, and check on eggs. There in that same clutch was a baby, fresh out of the egg with big yolk sac still attached! How's that for irony?

I've hatched several clutches of panthers over the years but it's been six years since I last had any and got to feel this excitement. It's always so much fun to see them emerge! I moved the baby, yolk, and shell to a separate container because this is the first clutch I've used fine grain vermiculite with. I really don't like it, but was all I could find at the time and in fact didn't realize there WAS a fine grade vermiculite until I opened the bag at home. I'm charging my camera batteries now so that I can get some pics of the two new girls I got at the Pomona show when I go back in a couple hours. Hopefully the hatchling will be up for a pic or two also.

Oh, and Chris, I don't think I'm going to bother candleing this clutch now, haha. :)

Awesome Kent!! Very Exciting!!! Can't wait to see the pics. The one that collapsed definately went bad though correct?

CONGRATS Kent! Dont loose hope in other eggs if they dent. I had some that were always dented while the others stayed normal and they dents stayed in them even after i added moisture and the babys still emerged perfectly healthy. Good luck, its an amazing feeling to peek in and see these guys crawling around!

How ironic is that...they must have known we were talking about them this morning. Yea...i think candling may be a bit overkill at the moment...lol

Congrats and I can't wait to see pics!

Congratulations! Glad you've got some viable ones. Looking forward to the pics, too.

I had one emerge with yolk sac attached. It lay on its side on the outside of the eggshell. I checked on it throughout the day and it was really neat because I could see, each time, the yolk sac getting smaller and smaller. Then it disappeared, and a short time later the umbilical cord detached and the little guy was up and about. He really was laying there, with his eyes closed the whole time, getting his last free meal.

Many thanks everyone! This little one did indeed pop out quickly and is still attached to his yolk sac tonight. I left him in another container in the incubator to finish up. I checked on him again and he had moved all the way across it but still has yolk and shell attached. My camera batteries died, again, before I got to take any pics.

I did get a few pics of the new girls from Pomona, though. I'll post them to Ryan's whatdyaget thread in a few.

It's a Boy!!

Well, the first hatchling moved around alot inside the container within the incubator. When I checked him this morning he had broken free from the shell and had just a little yolk remaining. I left him in the incubator until this afternoon when he looked ready. I put the container into full light and it took a little while for his pineal eye to sense it was time to "awaken." Once he opened his eyes he barely looked around, just sort of studying us. We left him alone for a few more minutes and he became much more aware, looking all around. I took these pics right before putting him in his baby tub:

Wow, when it rains it pours! A second clutch of panthers started hatching today. This clutch was laid 2 weeks before the other one and is a true cbb pairing. I saw no activity in these eggs yesterday but now there are three slit eggs and four more sweating. For sentimental reasons I am just ecstatic about this clutch hatching! :D :D :D

Awesome to hear!! I bet they will be adorable! (BTW your avatar messes with my eyes.) :) Congrats proud papa!

Oh yeah, forgot to say thanks everyone ;)

p.s. What does everyone think? Should I change the avatar? lol

A little update. This little guy had a female sibling hatch and survive for a few weeks but I lost her. All but two eggs which remain half-slit and died in the egg. :( This guy has continued doing well, provided he is kept alone. Even his little sister in with him was enough to make him hide, not eat, and stay dark all the time. The interesting thing about him is that this picture, taken a couple weeks ago (10 weeks old), shows a little boy bulge already.
