My husband and I have a ~1 year old Panther Morph Cross Chameleon that we bought as a baby approximately a year ago. Up until this point we have had NO problems with his health whatsoever. He always gets his supplements, has plenty of water, a nice (clean!) screen enclosure and we watch his temp/humidity like a hawk.
A couple days ago I noticed his eye was crusted over. I say crusted for lack of better term... it was just over the opening itself preventing him from opening/closing it completely, and it was clear... film-like even. His eye was also visibly sunken in. My husband cleaned it off and things appeared to be improving, until the next night when it had come back all over again. I noticed today that it appeared to have gotten worse. He's wasn't moving much (he's not a big fan of me, and he didn't budge when I opened his cage), I hadn't seen him drink anything in a while, but he was eating.
I did some searching and came across A LOT of sites that made this suggestion so I thought I would try it. I got a glass of lukewarm water and some clean qtips. I got some water on one of the qtips and let it drop onto his eye and soak, softening the "crust" so I could gently rub it. I repeated this until it came off completely.
Then he opened his eye! So I got my eyedropper and slowly let the warm water drip onto his eye. I left the room for ~15 minutes, went back to check on him and his eye looks 100%!! Open completely, no longer sunken in, and when I walked in the room he was drinking some water!
I can only assume now that he had something in his eye, and was dehydrated.
