July 29th (Tues) South Bay Chameleon Keepers Meeting

Howdy All,
If you live near enough to travel to Torrance, California between the 110 Fwy and the 405 Fwy on Artesia Blvd, the "South Bay Chameleon Keepers" (SBCK) meetings are held on the last Tuesday of the month from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm. Late arrivals are fine. We use the meeting room at the Toyota Automobile Museum (unmarked building).

The address is:

2076 Artesia Blvd
Torrance, CA 90504

Map: http://tinyurl.com/27jg4v (Notice the deep parking lot in front of the Museum!)

It's easy to accidentally drive right by the unmarked building and it is hard to see it at night anyway. Use the online map tool or a GPS to make sure that you know where to turn into the driveway! Meetings are pretty much free-flowing with all chameleon topics open for discussion. "Show and Tell" discussions are common. We're experimenting with group bulk-buys (silkworms etc.) at our meetings. Some members may be bringing dubias, silkworms, hornworms and crickets to sell but that's not guaranteed. Some of us have brought our chameleon books and magazines along with various items to spark discussions. Don't expect a lot from the meeting and you won't be too disappointed. Let us know if you are looking for these feeders (or anything else) and we'll try to confirm availability (pre-ordering) before the meeting.

Don't hesitate to RSVP with an email to: [email protected] if you think you might be coming. Didn't RSVP? Come anyway.
Got lost? The meeting room phone number is only useful during meeting hours. 310-329-5170

Our group ranges from long-time breeders to novice keepers. Lately, there have been 8-12 members attending. There's usually a new member at every meeting.

Most of the time, Dave Weldon will be bringing his microscope for anyone who brings a fecal sample. He will do fecal smears (not floats - potentially too messy for that room) at the meeting which still works well for many parasite types.

No guarantees but there is usually plenty of food and drinks brought in by some of the attendees.
See You There,
SBCK

Need medium sized land snails

If anybody planning to attend the SBCK meeting, has snails in their garden, please bring me some. I know their hard to find this time of year. I might be checking out Harbor regional park ( where Reggie the alligator was hanging out before his stay at the LA Zoo ) early Saturday morning. Otherwise if anybody knows a good park in Orange county with good snail tracks in the early mist of morning, please point the way.

Steve, i have lots of small wild snails in my garden (hang out on my bromelliad). I just usually toss them away. I'll try to collect them if you want. My garden is pesticide free but I never tried to feed snails to my cham. I am a bit concern with some of the potential parasites they might carry.

But, if you still want them, i'll keep an eye out.
I can give them to you later when I pickup the stick insects :)

Covered in dust

Okay, I just finished making a few batches of gutload, so if your planing to attend the meeting and want some I should have it covered. New twist is that I made up about 10 pounds of the Montane mix. Takes a little longer to make. After making it, I know that this is the stuff I remember getting back in the good old days ( 3 or 4 years ago ) when I first coined the phase, "cricket crack", cause the crickets attacked the stuff like it was a drug they needed, every time I dropped a oz. of it, in their bin.
Also, picked some snails, and their filling up their bellies with oatmeal today. Salad tomorrow, and on the menu by mid week.
See you all Tuesday night. :) ps will be picking up crickets Tuesday morning, for delivery at the meeting. so get your orders in by Monday night, 6 pm.

Howdy Ed,

I'll be bringing ~50 very large silkworms (raised on leaves) in hopes of trading for smaller ones that have a couple more weeks before they get this big or selling them off if there are none to trade for.

Howdy All,

Tonight is the SBCK meeting! Check the beginning of the thread for hours and directions. I'll be bringing a couple of boxes of misc. "chameleon garage sale" items to sell-off cheap. Mostly various basking, UVB and ceramic heater goodies. Nothing to get overly excited about but they might make good back-up pieces etc. :)

Dave, I have a quick question.
It's a bit off topic, but I figured you would respond here.
I know you have the Solar Meter 6.2
have you ever tested a 15" ReptiSun 5.0?
I have one and it sure is dim....
Should I be concerned?

Thanks
J

Howdy Carl,

The shortest Reptisun 5.0 that I've tested is the 18" tube. I would expect that the 15" tube would be a little less total energy but that "inch-for-inch" they would be close. That length would make a nice baby enclosure UVB light. I'm not sure what to say about it being visually dim. Is it less than a year old?

ZooMed ReptiSun 5.0 UVB Bulbs
15" 14 watt T-8
18" 15 watt T-8
24" 20 watt T-12
36" 30 watt T-12
48" 40 watt T-12

The "T" number refers to the diameter in 8ths of an inch. As you can see, the 15" and the 18" are the same 1" diameter. 14 vs 15 watts shouldn't make much of a difference either :).

My monthly fix is finally here.

The quickest 2 hours spent in a room full of chameleon keepers. It feels like 9 months in between meetings.

Go over to our old building on Bake and Commercentre! LOL EVERY MORNING there are dead smashed snails all over the place.... I am sure there are some live ones that havn't ventured out onto the side walk.
