Do these kind of photos require a special lens? I was trying out my wifes nice camera, but I couldn't get up close without it being blurry. I also know nothing about photography other than it is quite a skill.

I actually take most of my pictures with my iPhone but this picture was taken with my Canon DSLR using a 100mm lens.
