Jasper Vs. Hummingbird + Updated Photo's

So i decided to take Jasper out today because it was a nice day. I free range Jasper on a tree in my backyard. 30 minutes into basking all of a sudden a hummingbird gets in his face! So Jasper moves closer to the hummingbird and it looked like he was getting ready to gobble him up!

The humming bird was no more than a foot away and must of flew around him for a good minute. I eventually scared the humming bird off because Jasper was going to grab him when he got the perfect chance.

Wish i had my camera to record the entire thing, i thought it was funny.

Is this normal? I noticed humming birds are very curious to little animals. I ended up using my iPhone to take the pic. Also added a few more pics of Jasper that were taken today. Looking into investing in a Macro Lens :D

Also Jasper was really dark before the hummingbird showed up, he was just basking. And those grey spots are water droplets from his earlier mist.

It is definitely normal for them to want to get a small bird. Though looking at your pics, that would have been way too big of a meal!! I have heard multiple accounts of veileds and oustalets snagging humming birds out of the air.

I thought it was amazing...But it was def WAY too big for my cham to eat.

I also didn't want to risk my cham eating any parasites, mites, ticks, etc.

Dude! That looks like a pterodactyl swooping in for the kill!!

And the pic with the teeth is awesome! Nice work! :)

whether or not he may have made a move to eat it, many chams just innately get pretty excited when they see a flying small creature. so they follow it quickly with their heads and sometimes get their tongues in the "pre-fire" position. just good ol' instinct.

great capture for an iPhone!

Thats good to know, i noticed my cham gets excited by winged creatures :D I want to get him some praying mantis'! Are there any websites that i could possibly order some? Or some dragon flys? Or other recommended flying insects?

That first pic is pretty awesome, great looking shots all the way around.

Thank you! I just wished i had my camera at that moment...Would of been a great shot & Video.

I found some mantis oothecas at a local nursery. Might want to bust out google maps and search a few and lob some calls. If all else fails, look it up on google. Lots of opportunity to buy them on line. :)

Nice! What are the precautions for mantis? I know they're one hell of a bug, they damn near eat any insect they want haha. I'll def google them and hopefully i can find some in my area.

If all else fails, i might make a camping trip and try and catch some lol.

I had a heck of a time raising them. Out of the 200+ that hatched (from one ootheca), all but 10 died or were consumed by their brothers and sisters within a week. It didn't matter how many fruit flies I threw in there, they cannibalized bad! Some members have had great successes, I have given up for now... :(

wow...I knew there was a catch with raising mantis LOL. I used to catch them all the time and bring them home from camping trips. Once i'd get home there would be atleast 1-2 mantis that were eaten up haha.

It's like they're their own gutload!

I couldn't find any breeders, found a few sites but they sell the exotic leaf looking ones. Don't really want to feed my cham a $30 mantis haha! I guess i'll expand my options and pay for shipping if possible.
