Jacksons as next cham?

Hey guys,

Im looking for my next cham to be a Male Jacksons, any good threads you guys can point me towards or any other sites on the internet that have good care tips for them?

I wish I'd book marked the link but they are very similar to other chameleons in terms of care. They do need cooler temps though. 65-70F at night and up to 85-90 in their basking spot during the day. Thats one of the only big differences.

They also seem a bit more tame than other species, but thats more of an opinion =)

nothing particularly difficult, but keep in mind that xanths require considerably less supplementation than non montanes. the maximum accessible temps in my cage(s) is 84* and i try to provide a nightime drop of at least 12* from the ambient cage temps, not the basking temps,so most nights my overnight temp is about 63* jmo ;)

ok well if they are really no big difference then i should be good, i just see alot of people having trouble with their jacksons on the forums :\

alrighty, well keeping it humid is no problem, my only concern is that in the summer i dont have any type of ac in my house so it gets pretty hot! it might be a bit over 70 :\ the only place thats that temp is my basement but i wanna be able to see him without going into that dark secluded room every day haha

I have Fischer's who are similarly mountainous.... and one of mine definitely did not like the 85 degree hot spell we had last week...but he let me know (he gaped) and I upped the misting and we lived through it.

I suspect it's never going to get that much over 80 that it's a problem. Of course, I might be wrong on that.

If it did get hot, then I think there are things that can be done.

under control?

famous last words, i said nothing particularly difficult, not, really no big difference. yes there are alot of people who have trouble with their jacksons and chameleons in general. thats because they get them before they learn enough about them. the first mistake with any chameleon, is assuming youve got it under control. jmo

ya i hear ya, i definatly did my reasearch before i got my first cham i just had alot of questions about him in general, just hearing about cooler temps and higher humidity gave me the impression that there was more to keeping them. i do so much reasearch on reptiles ill probobly never own its nt even funny :p

Stuff like cooler temps and more humidity doesn't really mean more work, not really. Cooler basking spot = weaker bulb, and more humidity = more plants to hold humidity, more misting, and maybe a shower curtain to hold in the cage's humidity. I don't even think misting is work, since I have a pump connected to the cage and I'll put water in and it can mist for 20 minutes without needing anything more from me.

I only have one Jackson's, so I can't make generaliztions, but he's been a breeze to take care of in my opinion. Once you have the set-up finished correctly he doesn't require more work than my panthers. I remember that before I got my first gecko, I thought that the care of leopard geckos sounded difficult on paper! lol and there is nothing to it.

Just read through caresheets and think about the care and what you think you can afford and handle.

ya thats what iv been doing, they dont really seem that different from other chams, from what i understand a full size jacksons is smaller than a full size panther is this true?

i agree, different conditions doesnt neccessarily mean more work. i think the bigger issue with jacksons is that you need to be a little more aware of supplementation and health issues and find out a little earlier in the event things are not going well, but i dont think a healthy xanth is any more work than a healthy veiled or panther, just different. there is a strain of jacksons marketed as giant jacksons, but i have never seen one in person or even seen pics, and of course some xanths are noticeably larger than others, but i doubt they are ever as large as the average panther. jmo

haha well its good! i love being in pet stores and hear people wonder about reptiles or they ask themselves questions and im like "oh well blah blah blah" haha

I do the same thing!!!:D I sometimes go to test their chameleon knowledge of the pet store owners and then correct them:rolleyes: they usually dont care to hear a 16 year old blabber on but i love it when fellow customers ask me if i work there:cool: then to their suprise i tell them i dont

Jacksons

I bought my Jacksons from FL CHAM and would not hesitate to do it again. I have a male and female and they are the greatest. :)
