My WC male jacksoni jacksoni, started to shed a couple of days ago. This morning still only the whole of his head had gone white & the skin has started to shed/loosen. He wouldn't feed (though i know this is common when chameleons shed) but was drinking. Came home this evening & his eyes are closed & sunken, he looks weak & was pretty unresponsive & every now & then would open his mouth. Took a little water from a syringe, but not like or as much as he usually drinks. Has gone downhill very fast. Can see no other clues to what is wrong. Other animals in the room are fine. All fed the same food & watered the same way/amount. He doesn't have MBD. Like i said, two days ago he was fine. Since he started to shed seems to be when things have changed???

Unfortunately he died last night.
I found him when i checked on him before going to bed.
Thanks for replying anyway.

Thanks fellas.
Real shame tbh, & quite a shock (though i must admit i feared the worst when i saw him yesterday evening), as he seemed to be doing so well.
Although i have only recently started keeping montane species (kept yemens & panthers for six years, a few years back) i'm fairly confident it's not something wrong with my husbandry. Has definitely put me off WC animals. Especially those that i don't know any history of. Will in the future stear clear & try to purchase only CB animals, or at least LTC that i have some info of their history.

I'm going to clean out the tank today. Will throw away the substrate, but was wondering if i can use the live plants in another tank at some point? Also the back & sides of the exo terra, are covered with coco fibre panels. Should i clean these & how would be the best way? Dont really want to throw them away.

I don't see why you can't use the plants again, but you might not want to. If you use them again, wash them well in soapy (hand dish detergent) repeatedly. I would remove the top inch of soil. I would not use them for a few months--let what parasites he shed hatch and try get rid of them by washing the plants every few weeks.

Your Jackson was a wild caught, so you can be assured he was carrying and shedding parasites since you didn't worm him or check for parasites. It's to be expected with a wild caught. Because he has contaminated the cage, I would toss the coco mats. If you don't toss them, wash and then bake them. Since he died with no diagnosis, I would assume he was diseased and try to sterilize everything. I would go through the process several times.

It is quite possible that your chameleon was actually quite old and might have died at about the normal time for him. I suspect his capture and captivity might have hastened it. You really have no idea how old he really was. Wild caughts are very fragile once they end up in captivity. I'm working with two newly wild caught animals, and they are just a lot more vulnerable to the fall out from captivity than the captive breds.

Again, sorry for your loss.
