The fruit around the seed of some _Podocarpus_ sp. is sometimes toxic to mammals. Birds are the usual dispersal agents. Like most conifers, its low risk for reptiles.
FWIW, several Podocarpus sp. are native to Africa and Madagascar.

Yes, if its not fruiting, its *probably* safe. There are a lot of species of _Podocarpus_ though. I could not find any reference listing a poisoning event in English; that doesn't mean it has never happened.
