I tried introducing my female with my male and she freaked out, she has been really pink lately, what do you guys think? Is she receptive? Also will females still be pink if they are gravid?
if a male spots a female sitting in his vicinity, he will display his brightest colors in hope of getting her attention. when necessary, the male will leave his territory. He will make sure to get her attention through rocking head motions, performing little shimmies for her, and sometimes emitting what feel to the touch like brief purrs. IF the female is reeptive, she remains totally passive. when not in the mood, whe will send visual signals, such as opening her mouth and, rocking her body on a branch while keeping an eye on the suitor. it often happens that a female will use her forearm to reject a pushy male, and leave the branch she sat on, only to be pursued by the male, at times for days.
Chapter 11 Inducing Reproduction in Captive Chameleons
Section Breeding Techniques
To breed chameleons, you must have at least ap pair of compatible adult chameleons. Three types of breeding systems can be used singly or in combination with each other: harem mating, pair mating, and time mating.
Harem Mating
Harem Mating involves providing several females for one male, or vice-versa. Chameleons are kept in groups and are free to choose thier oown mate. It is recommended for slow-growing species living in spacious enclosures or free-range rooms, as these animals mioght engage in lengthy courtships (calumma parsonii and Chamlaeleo melleri, for example). At Times, male rivalry is necessary to provoke the animals and initiate active courtship. If this is the case, you might make use of a mirror so that the males can see thier reflections from time to time. This will give them excitement and the stimulation they need to mate without getting hurt.
Pair Mating
In pair mating, a chameleonis kept together until copulation has taken place. it is indicated for "aggressive" heliophilic (sun loving) species that do not engage in lengthy matting rituals, such as Chamaelo calyotratus and Fucifer species. These types of chameleons are stimulated by sunlight, so make sure to breed them on warm, sunny day, or under strong lighting. It is usually necessary to separate the male and female after copulation, as both sexes can be aggressive toward on another.
Time Mating
Time mating invovles breaking an isolation and/or resting period by introducing a sexual partner into the territory of a potential mate. i recomend it for species with a softer temprament, but also for species experiencing little climatic variation in their natural habitats, such as Chamaeleo jacksonii, Chamaeleo quadricorns, Chamaeleo johnstoni, C. Malthe. For example, you might switch on the lights of your enclosure and introduce a male to a female in the middle of the night, or leave a female in the enclosure of an isolated potential mate.
Caring for Gravid Females
As soon as mating has occure, females go through a hormonal change that becomes obvious withing minutes as their coloration and temprament change. Many females become hostile to males of their own species, and it is best to give them a place of their own. During and after this period of time, they should be fed a regimen of hugher-quality food 9silkworms, gut-loaded flies supplemented with multivitamins, powdered sea kelp-kombu and nigari water in small doses also do wonders-minerals, and trace elements) rather than crickets alone.
the enclosures should be prepared according to the factors gravis femals are known to look for, such as the soil's physical feel and composition (dead leaves, humus, or sandy) warmth, and possible nesting sites (mounds or dirt facing the moring sun, plant roots ina pot, shade). Some breaders creat a hot spot under a barren area in the enclosure where the female can lay her eggs, whereas others prefer to move their gravid females to new setups. Some even put them inside large buckets filled with nothing but 12 inches of substrate, which is probably a bit stressful for the animals. the egg-laying operation should be monitored and the eggs removed from the nesting site as soon as the femal is finished with her work.
Dysocia (difficult Oviposition)
Egg-bound femals can sldo be offered a few drops of calcium lactate (in a concentration of 15 grams per liter) or calcium glucanate in similar proportions. if things do not get any better by the next day, a few drops of a mixture made out of water and Vaam powder (an amino acid mix used by athletes as a sports drink to enhance their endurance) has helped several of my egg bound female chamaeleonids.
"PROPER NUTRITON"
Some females may be egg-bound or experience a difficult oviposition. the contraction of the muscles requires calcium ions to be transferred from the blood to the muscle cells. to avoid depleting the female's calcium reserves during the oviposition, proper nutrition before, during, and after this period is critical.
Peritonitis
In famales, peritonitis (inflammation of the peritoneum, the abdominal cavity membrane) mayresult from a rupture of the oviducts or the eggs. Peritonitis can sometimes be identified by bright yellowish spot on one of the animal's flanks (the infection causes discoloration of the chromatophores). The condition is mostly observed in wild-caught animals, and it requires urgent medical assistance from a veterinarian, antibiotic treatment, and possible surgery.
Cloacal Prolapse
Cloacal prolapse is a medical condition by which the terminal section of a chameleon's intestines falls down and comes out of place through the cloaca. Prolapsed clocae, both in male and female chamaeleonids, are best treated surgicallt by veterinarieans.
