hi my cham (veiled) is about 9 months now and has developed some blue and black spots she has not been mated but looks very big in that area.is it true they dont need to breed to have eggs??

she has been walking on the bottom of her enclosure today i have now put her a bucket of sand in to see what she does but she doesnt want to know, she is eating fine and has been out today and been normal,

any advise or tips i should be doing,

anything would be a big help, thanks

Normally, before they lay they go off food. If she will not eat for 4 or 5 days keep a close eye on her. They wil roam around allot more than usual. They gain weight and their bellies look bigger. If you have the space keep a laying bin in all the time. Just check the moisture in it every few days you may need to add water to keep it mosit enough for her to did a tunnel without it collapsing on her. I use washed playsand and keep it moist so that when I squeeze it no water comes out but it will form a ball in my hand.

You will see her dig; she will need to have a very private place to dig and lay eggs. If she sees you watching she can abandon the hole and become eggbound and die.

Hope this helps.

yes thanks that is what ive used playsand luckly ive had a spare bag in, she is very shy anyway and does alot when im out anyway. her belly does look bigger then normal which is why i was concerned just i was told when i got her when the blue spots show she needed to breed but i havnt done and some people on here have said they dont need to breed to have eggs, ive just been confused ha, just wanted to be on the safe side dont want her to end up dieing over it

thanks again

That's right - females can lay clutches of ifertile eggs without even seeing a male. When Lily laid hers I could see and feel the egg shapes above her back legs about a week before she laid. She would also stop eating for a week or so before hand. As long as they still drink they should be fine.

It always amazes me where they get the energy from to dig a tunnel, lay the eggs and fill in the hole after having not eaten for a week before hand! It would seem that the larger the clutch the longer they stop eating before - with all the eggs in their bellies there's not much room for food as well! :D

thanks for that miss lily i get very worried over these things ha ha, i just hope she does lay them i dont want her to die.:(

if this is what it is will her colour change back after?

thanks for that again

She willprobably keep some degree of colouring - their classic gravid colour is black with gold/yellow and blue spots. Lily never had those colours when gravid but she did have her normal adult colours which became more vibrant when she was receptive. Here's a pic of her before she laid one of her monster clutches. Big fat bum, bless her! Not the most flattering photo ever, lol!

I'll go and check out your other post. Lily looked like this when she was gravid - this pic shows her colours better. It was taken about a month before she laid her last clutch.

If you upload your pics to an image hosting website, such as Photobucket, you can link the same pic as many times as you want. :D The pics also come up bigger in the thread too rather than clickable thumbnails.
