Seems unnecessary and kind of cruel if it's a live feeding, but yeah, chameleons eat small animals in the wild.

Probably is real, but is certainly wrong. There are some who for whatever reason will on infrequent occasion give their chameleon a mouse, it is most commonly (and correctly for a chameleon of this size) a pinkie. The size of this rodent is much too large for the chameleon to eat. While he may have literally choked it down, it doesn’t mean he should be given a rodent or any other feeder of this size. Also, while the infrequent meal of a rodent, lizard or other vertebrate feeder may be ok, if given too often, they can cause serious health issues such as gout and kidney disease. So, imho, this video is an example of what NOT to do.

I saw another video where they were feeding a chameleon a piece of banana... I know you can give them a piece of apple, but I didn't know about bananas. Isn't it too heavy to digest?

Truly, the very best things to feed chameleons are a variety of proper size feeder insects, such as those below in the graphic. The second graphic is the best food items to feed to the insects to keep them healthy and nutritious.
While veiled chameleons will eat plant and vegetable matter, it is best not to give it to them. They really have no need for it and it’s said that they lack the ability to properly digest it. There have been very few who do provide occasional greens to their veileds to help prevent them from stripping their plants bare. Fruits are not advised due to their high sugar content. If a chameleon is given a small piece of banana or other safe fruit, it won’t harm them as long as it’s a very rare treat (maybe once every several months). The only non-insect treat that I give to my veiled is hibiscus flower, and that is only maybe a couple of times per year.

Nobody eats apples here. Everyone loves bananas and black/blue berries. Even the frilled dragons will eat them if you pull them on a string and go fishing.
