ok i have a quick question....if anybody out there could help me...is it ok
to use a water dish for a chameleon....like i know they wont drink from standing water...i woundering if u could use a little air pump with one of those air stone rock inside the whater...do u think he would drink from it

You could give it a try. I've heard of people training their chameleons to drink from bowls. I guess if it were me I'd add a drip that landed in the bowl at first to sort of enhance it. However, you need to be monitoring your chameleon and making sure he gets enough fluid. His health is more important than you proving you can train him to drink from a bowl.

That's a breeding ground for bacteria. I'd stick with regar misting for long periods 5+ minutes depending on species, and a dripper that runs for most of the day.

i know every body say's....your trying to kill your chameleon...what if u change the water like every week is that still bad

Maybe if you change it every day and super clean it out every day. Once a week isn't enough. That's the same reason we don't recommend waterfalls.

I think you would need to see what happens before making a decision on changing out the water. Once a week would be minimal. If the chameleon is pooping in the water (and, they will...apparently it's an instinct) you should change the water out daily.

If you really think the dish needs to be sanitized then just run it through the dishwasher or let it spend some time in a bleach/water mix. If you do the latter, RINSE, RINSE, RINSE and air dry before putting it back in the cage.

I actually was thinking of getting a really small shallow dish (maybe a twist cap off a bottle of water), hanging it up in the ole ficus, and having the dripper, drip into that mini cup =). In theory, my baby panther would see the water dripping and when hes thirsty, rush to the zone of the drippage to discover a resoivoir of water, thats ever replacing itself. Of course I would keep up the misting. It's just a thought.

Actually some chams like my own 3 month old veiled drinks straight from the water dish in his enclosure! I find him there many times in the week lapping the water and he has only defecated in it once! :) and there was no training involved and I mist him 3 times a day and have a drip system and no dripping motion in the water at all it's just still all the time! :)

The Dont Drink Standing Water

its bad for bacteria and all so u will prob never see them drink it.....and thats not good so best is the lil dripper plus mister using the rain effect several times daily

Just because a cham can do it... doesn't mean it is a good idea...

So far I have never had a problem with my water dish and chameleon... I clean the cage 2 times a week since he's young and clean the dish daily so build up isn't really bad for the bacteria... But I do see good points in not having a dish... But it is nice if you are gone to have the dripped and the dish too.. It could also be a good water catcher from the dripped :)

Like the others, I don't think it is a good idea to have long standing water in a dish with a bubbler.

But- when I used to use drip cups, I always dripped onto a leaf under which a catch bowl was placed. Most cams will learn to drink from the bowl directly when water is dripping into it either off of a leaf above or directly from the drip cup so it splashes as it drips and fills the bowl. For larger cams this is a pretty good way for them to get plenty of water when drinking, as opposed to a quick misting or only dripping on leaves. I always dumped the bowls at the end of the day though- I never let water sit around in them.

like i use to own a jackson a long time ago when i frist bought him i did not train him to drink from the dish like..I had the whole setup ready to go...with a water dish inside....and i had a little air pump going inside the cage...with a air stone that it couse bubbles so he could see the water....like an two hours i seen drinking from the dish....
