is it normal for my veild to fling her toung at the potting soil in the plant pots in her cage???i think shes eating the soil///////idk if thats safe or not...but it seems weard...i got the soil from petsmart its eco earth and another type of soil but both from petsmar...

im no expert but i know ingestion of dirt/soil can cause problems, you could try covering the exposed soil in the pot with flat clean rocks big enough they couldnt be ingested ofcourse. Also dont go to petsmart they treat all there animals like crap and all the chameleons they have do not get proper houseing care water pretty much anything of proper chameleon care petsmart lacks.. find a nice local owned shop that takes pride in their work and care of there animals.. petsmarts in it for nothign but $

Suggestion...

Yeas, you do not want your Cham eating potting soil... are you saying your Cahm is shooting at it from teh plants you have potted in the cage? If so you can cover the soil with screen and then cover the screen with properly clean "river rock" or something along those lines... You snow some type of smoothe round rocks on the larger side so they cannot be eaten.

On the other hand you do not have any type of soil or subtrate on the bottom of you cage floor do you? If so you will want to remove that as well IMO ... the cage floor should be left bare.

Hope that helps... :p

It may be eating the white stuff in the soil, if its organic/eco friendly should be fine to ingest if you feel that it isnt safe put some large rocks over the soil this will stop her from even thinking about it. i had the same problem and dirt can mess up their digestive system subsequently alot of dirts that come with the plants are full of pesticides but if youve repotted with animal safe products from petco i dont see a problem

yes she holds on to leaves and branches and shoots her tounge at the potting soil and it sticks to her toung and eats it...yes from the plans i have in potts in there she eats the dirt from there...oh yah i have no subtrate on the floor its bare...

yah i repotted the plants...with safe soil...but i think im going to still put rocks down there...

yes definately cover them up with large rocks ... eating any type of soil or substrate can cause impaction. its not good for there digestive system.

Unfortunately, anything that your cham eats that aren't feeders or nonpoisonous plants can harm them. Ingestion of "Any" type of soil, coconut fiber, moss, wood chips etc can cause impaction and lead to death. It only takes a little to do it. Always cover soil with large rocks or screen so chams can't get to the soil. Never use any type of substrate on the bottom of the cage even if it is organic and pesticide free. Use paper towels or leave the floor of the cage bare.
