Anyone can tell if it is a Nosy Faly or other species?

i am just wondering as I am new to Cham and dunno how to identify different Panther species
How can I identify different types of Panther?

He looks like he could be, I think I see some red spotting on his belly. He may look better outside in some sunshine or in better lighting.

Here's a great site to look at photos of different locales (types of Panther chameleons) and get an idea of what they look like: http://screameleons.com/chameleon-breeder/

There are several different locales. Like Ambanja, Ambilobe, Nosy Faly, Nosy Be, Nosy Mitsio, etc. They all have different color characteristics. I know it seems daunting but if you look at enough photos you start to be able to identify them fairly easily.

It's hard to tell with those pics. If you can get some better pics of him it would help. Were did you get him?.

Some fired up pics would help to see his color better. I had a Nosy Be that looked like a Faly just because it had some red but he was for sure a Nosy Be. Yours could be a toss up.

lol, seems the more pix i see the more i get .

I find that with the mainland locals there are some that scream their locale, but other show characteristics of near by locals (these may be naturally acuring crosses). I have seen some Sambamva looking Ambilobes.

Like i don't know what to make of Supernova with his "rain" pattern.

There was a thread recently with a guy with a pink Ambilobe

Lol Yea, I'm not going to say that some aren't a little ambiguous. But even though Ambis come in 30 different variations, you get used to them and can recognize them as Ambilobes. Same thing for Ambanjas, or whatnot. You get used to them eventually lol.

Sometimes it gets sort of fuzzy though, this is true.

It sure does... I mean some locales can easily be identified... But a few like Ambilobe & Sambavas can really be difficult,Ambilobe blue bars, red bars, green bodys, red bodys, yellow bodys. Who's to know for sure, unless you go there and wild catch it yourself. The females could easily get mixed around and who could tell?

Who did you buy him from? Did you see a sire or a pic of the sire? If not then its really just a guess? He does look like he may be a faly or a faly/be cross. But without lineage info who knows?

I would say its more of an Ambanja/ Nosy be cross rather than a faly. the very long rostral process is better seen in the ambanjas, and that coloration fits into the description of a nosy be. The nosy faly rostral process is not as pronounced as the Ambanja. Also, imo the Ambanja head is a little more sharply defined than the faly. But every specimen is different so thats just from what I have seen.

But as Scott said, without lineage, there is no way to know for sure.
