Idk, I've usually completely disregarded moths with any interesting coloring like that. Especially reds, blues, and I guess purple now. Did not know there were purple moths honestly. Don't take my word for it though, I'm sure someone on the forums knows more about moths than me :eek:
 
That is a Rosy Maple Moth, Dryocampa rubicunda. The host plant for the caterpillar is oak and maple trees. It should be a safe choice as a snack.

Thanks so much ! He stayed in my porch for a couple days so I figured if he was staying he was going to be eaten !!!
