Insane! Crab using gun to kill prey!

Google 'mantis shrimp' :)

Here's a short video showing a puncher: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgvsQ6oNZyo

These guys can wreck havoc on whatever they want to destroy. I believe that there are two "types" of these shrimp, ones with a dull claw that is used to punch, and ones that have a harpoon tucked away that they use to spear prey. There are plenty of reports of angry mantis shrimp punching holes/cracks in glass aquaria, and/or breaking/cutting up fingers. The force they can generate is really amazing.

I had one once... Got him by accident, and thankfully he didn't live too long. He used to scare the crap outta me. :)

its not a mantis shrimp.....its a different kind i think its called a barrel shrimp or something, mantis shrimp use there claws and "punch" this one actually uses it as a projectile

It isn't a projectile. The snapping of the claw is done at supersonic speeds. That have enough force to create cavitation bubble that generates an acoustic shock wave that will travel up up to 4cm from the claw. The pressure is strong enough to kill small fish and stun larger animals.

The mantis, although looks similarly, is not a shrimp. It is a stomatopods. It is much more powerful than the pistol shrimp. They hunt by punching a club like claw. This punch is also at incredible speeds, and delivers a blow the equivalent of a .22 caliber bullet. Mantis have been known to bust through the sides of aquariums, and split keepers thumbs in half.

The mantis is also much larger than the pistol and in most cases more vibrantly colored. I know individuals who create small 5 gallon pico tanks devoted to mantis. If it breaks it...it's only 5 gals on the floor.

Like I said, 'He'll be back!

I don't want to downplay th pistol shrimp. It is an awesome shrimp all by itself. And you rarely have any worries about one busting through your tank. They do make having a reef difficult. Unless it's a huge reef. You won't be able to keep your invert populations high enough. still it's cool to observe them hunt.

Thanks for posting this Sancho. That is a sweet video.
