Idiot Proof Plants

So I am terrible with plants. I have to replace even a ficus about every 6 months (and that's a tough one). I am looking for the best plants that are generally able to live through just about anything. It either goes from over watering, to underwatering, lighting. Never seems to end. During the summer it's not as bad, because I can sit them outside on occasion. I also need something fairly easy to find. Basically something they would sell at Home Depot.
 
I have yet to find a plant that can stand up to the abuse and live longer than 6 months.

Have you tired an aquarium light on top with a bulb for growing?
 
Pothos is a miracle plant. If you can find one with large vines growing from it, build a climbing structure and wrap the vines all over it. I use umbrellas for my adults and juvies but the female laying bins have them planted in there and the babys are in with pothos as well. I have to trim them back every few weeks cause they'll grow out of control.

Agreed.

When you prune them you can root the cuttings in a glass of water in your kitchen window.
You'll have lots of plants in very little time!

you can hang them, pot them, whatever, a little bit of drainage and you are good

More water means they grow faster,
less water not so much, maybe a dead leaf every now and then.

Ha, I still killed the pothos!! :) And am currently killing Spider plants! Whee! I have a giant schefflera in there now that is in great bloom along with a pothos..but the dripper drips on them and Im scared that they will be water logged even though i have them in open containers..but the water on the bottom of the cage seeps right back in.. Ugh..Thats a good idea to use the pothos on the climbing.. Mine just hangs out at the bottom moreso for humidity purposes.. I dont understand the pothos and laying bin thing..?

EDIT:wait, I forgot to write "agreed" as my opening word.:) LOL!
 
pothos are very hardy. I keep one in my cages for humidity, but they aren't very practical chameleon plant IMHO because they can't really be climbed on because they don't have branches. My favorite plant is the schefflera. I bought 2 from home depot at the beginning of the summer and they are both still kicking. One grew too much and had to be cut, but that is it. It is perfect for my female...but the branched on that still cant hold my male...he just uses it for shade!
 
Danielle beat me to it but I wholeheartedly think Scheffleras are the best for medium to large chameleons. They can take full light, little light, indoor fake light, too much or too little water, and the weight of chameleons cruizing around them. I've always used Ficus because they're cheap and readily available but I've never had one smaller than 3 feet tall live for more than six months.
 
Thanks guys, I may try both of those and see how it goes. I am gonna have to write it down though, because I know I will forget by the time I get to the store. :p
 
You are fortunate Brad. Mine will eat peat moss, dirt, sand...anything not glued down or covered up with river rock. I know this by looking at the poop with peat in it. I think you have to find out what your cham is likely to do.

My male eats it on occasion.
This is the reason for sifting. I'm not entirely convinced that they don't need it, so I let them have access and do my best not to provide any material that would be large enough to cause an impaction issue.
So far everything is okay and Kitty has been eating dirt for 2+ years.:rolleyes:

Actually Kent, don't give me to much credit, I believe you were the one who informed me about them. I had already killed at least 8 ficus and a couple hibiscus at that point :)
 
Pothos are pretty hard to kill. You have to work at killing them. :)
they will grow in water - no soil necessary.
they will grow in very low light
they will survive drought quite well
