soo..im doing my senior project on why new owners should research about their animals and prepare before getting them, using chameleons as a specific example. i need a couple references and i think hearing from you guys as kind of an interview would be great! heres ten questions that i need to answer in my paper, they are kind of dumb, and i know all the answers, but i need proof behind them, so if you guys would kindly answer them, sound very intelligent and possibly have maybe a link or two for further proof (doesnt matter if you dont) i would greatly appreciate it :)

1.) Why do you think chain pet stores buy animals in bulk and not for quality?

2.) Why do you think chain stores give the wrong information? is it because their uneducated, or because they want to sell more, your thoughts..

3.) Why is it necessary to find and research a specific species, and not get the first one you find?

4.) What is the difference between using a fish tank, a glass terrarium, and a screened cage?

5.) Why cant chameleons just be given a bowl of water?

6.) Why does their cage need a temperature gradient?

7.) Why do they have to have U.V.B. light?

8.) Why cant chameleons live on just one type of insect?

9.) Why do they have to be supplemented?

10.) Why do their daily needs have to follow a schedule, cant i just feed and water them when i want?

Bonus: Why is it necessary to have a plan just in case last minute plans happen that cause the owner to go away for a long period of time?

anything else anyone wants to add? any more questions i can add to the list?

1.) Why do you think chain pet stores buy animals in bulk and not for quality?
They buy in bulk because they can get a better price

2.) Why do you think chain stores give the wrong information? is it because their uneducated, or because they want to sell more, your thoughts..

I personally think it's a combination of both . Alot of them aren't educated as well as they should be ( i.e. the proper care of the animals ) , and also they want to move the animals they have out , get more in and make more profit
3.) Why is it necessary to find and research a specific species, and not get the first one you find?
This is something I do ... research first . If you just buy on a whim just because it's the first thing you see , it may be something you're not able or not willing to spend the time and money to care for

4.) What is the difference between using a fish tank, a glass terrarium, and a screened cage?

Well , if I understand everything people have told me , it's all about ventilation and humidity . Also , aquariums can breed bacteria ... not a good thing for the pet in question
5.) Why cant chameleons just be given a bowl of water?
Chameleons don't recognize bowls of water as something to drink from ... they drink from water dripping off leaves

6.) Why does their cage need a temperature gradient?

If it's too hot , they could dehydrate and if it's too cold , they could die from that too . I may be wrong on the reasoning here , but I'm thinking too much fluctuation in temps could cause respiratory issues
7.) Why do they have to have U.V.B. light?
It helps them digest their food and simulates sun rays , which they need to help them get vitamin D

8.) Why cant chameleons live on just one type of insect?

A variety gives them more nutritional values
9.) Why do they have to be supplemented?
I think it's because , like the UVB light , it helps with adding vitamins into their bodies
10.) Why do their daily needs have to follow a schedule, cant i just feed and water them when i want?

Ok , this one I'm not sure of . All I know is every pet I've ever had I've tried to keep on a schedule
Bonus: Why is it necessary to have a plan just in case last minute plans happen that cause the owner to go away for a long period of time?
If there's nobody to care for it , or any pet for that matter , they'll die

I hope this helps you . i'm new to the whole cham experience ( still waiting for my first one to be shipped ) , so although I may know what to do , some of the reasons as to why I'm supposed to do them I'm not so sure of .

1.) Why do you think chain pet stores buy animals in bulk and not for quality? Because that's what chain stores do. You don't get the best meat at a chain store, you certainly don't get the best fish. Buyers wanting quality know to go elsewhere.

2.) Why do you think chain stores give the wrong information? is it because their uneducated, or because they want to sell more, your thoughts.. Mixed bag. Some chain stores have very good care sheets, but their in store advice is bad. I don't think they can afford to have workers who are so specialized. The guy who tells you about chameleons also has to tell someone else about rodents. That's a higher quality worker than they can afford in that position.

3.) Why is it necessary to find and research a specific species, and not get the first one you find? Well...it's preferred. I wouldn't say it's necessary. Many of us got our first chameleon on a whim and based on what was available. Yet, we made do. I think the question is based on a false assumption.

4.) What is the difference between using a fish tank, a glass terrarium, and a screened cage? A fish tank requires carfeul placement of the lights to create airflow. As it's not a good "vertical" environment, it probably needs more attention to the climbing opportunities. A fish tank demands attention to temperatures and humidity because they are harder to control. A glass terrarium is an excellent alternative as long as it has good ventilation. It keeps humidity well. A screen cage is really the easiest, but in dry climates, people resort to covering a lot of it with plastic so I often wonder why they didn't buy a glass terrarium.

5.) Why cant chameleons just be given a bowl of water? They will not naturally drink from a bowl of water and as much as we think instinct will kick in, their instincts are different. Their instinct is to drink from rain water and dew off leaves. So, we have to recreate that. But, some do learn to drink from bowls.

6.) Why does their cage need a temperature gradient? Like most animals, they need the ability to move to cooler realms when they are too hot, and move to hotter realms when they are too cool. As they are exothermic, this is more important for them than it might be for en endothermic animal. But really, all animals need options.

7.) Why do they have to have U.V.B. light? It's a fake sun...the lights humans use indoors do not fully replicate the sun. They need those UVB rays (just as we do, but we're not stuck in cages).

8.) Why cant chameleons live on just one type of insect? I'm not entirely sure they can't.

9.) Why do they have to be supplemented? Because it takes a whole lot of work to feed them correctly without resorting to supplements. Supplements, done correctly, take a bit of worry off the owner's minds.

10.) Why do their daily needs have to follow a schedule, cant i just feed and water them when i want? Because they're living things and they need to be able to eat when they are hungry.

Bonus: Why is it necessary to have a plan just in case last minute plans happen that cause the owner to go away for a long period of time? Because it's always good to have a plan. Unless the cages have an automated mister, an unexpected absence of more than a day or two has the possibility of doing harm to the chameleon
