Ok so I have this really big cage that I had help from a really good friend, turn into an awesome real life habitat. Now I want the main reptile to be a chameleon cause I think they are awesome. The friend that helped me has about 7 chameleons and every time I go to his house I love to watch them and just started handling them. I want to know what or even if I can put anything with the chameleons and if I can even have more than one chameleon in this cage. Please help me set this up. At the moment I have three tree frogs, three anoles and a Jesus lizard in the cage now. What do I have to get ride of and or what do I have to do to set this up. Thanks for all your help...

Many chameleons need screened cages with good ventilation. What are the dimensions? Also, idk about it if the cage is "live" because many substrates can cause impaction. Generally they are not recommended. Also most species of chameleons should be kept alone. They are territorial and will hurt each other, or stress each other out to the point of death.

Chameleons shouldn't be kept with any other animals. Again, this is just unecessary stress.

hope this helps

if a chameleon is your wish then extensive research should be done...search the site by useing the search button in the menu....for all your questions....

also this is what the cage has to be for a vieled or panther...the two most popular...

the almost always have to be kept alone...there is an awsome care video called the raisiankitty care sheet....take a look at it.http://raisingkittytheveiledchameleon.blogspot.com/
they arent like other animals...im shure your friend taught you some valuble info...and this care sheet should hopefully answer any Q's that you cant find in the search button.....good luck.

im the friend guys...its a nice cage but i dont think it has enough ventilation...this guy doesnt listen to me..so i hope you can help him understand the details of an animal thriving and not surviving..i think besides the ventialtion issue ..i think the branches are too thick for basking...the moss and wood chips gotta go ..and he needs to invest in proper lighting...he isnt the typical newbie ..he really wants to do it right so please give him the knowledge you can

Judging from my own cage setups, the critiques I have received and the many pictures of other peoples enclosures, I would say this cage is not adequate for a chameleon. First off, there is not enough coverage in the cage for the chameleon to hide, nor is there enough branches for the chameleon to climb on (those logs are much to big for a chameleon and should be removed if thats what you plan on putting in there). Second, no substrate is really the best way to go, it avoids possible impaction and makes the cage easier to clean. Third, you need a screen enclosure, glass can be very stressful on the chameleon and can be a serious challenge for a new non-experienced chameleon keeper. Fourth, I only recognize one plant that is safe and sturdy enough for a chameleon. Fifth, all lights should be kept outside of the enclosure. Again, all these recommendations are coming from basic research, trial and error experiences, forum advice and most importantly veterinarian advice. If you really want to successfully keep a chameleon, I suggest you use a the standard full screen cages that most members on this forum use. Your own friend disagrees with your decision of keeping a chameleon in this cage and he has 7 chameleons, clearly he knows what he's talking about and I suggest you listen.

Let's not assume he's not willing to change the setup a little.

Let's start which type you want to keep. You will most certainly have to remove the existing animals for any species.

What are the dimensions?

Are you willing to change the door out for a screen door? It's usually not that difficult to do.

As mentioned earlier, lights will need to be outside of the enclosure and the logs should be replaced with thinner branches. Many people prefer to use larger live plants with dried branches mixed in.

Substrate should be removed. It's really more hassles than it's worth.

I think with some modifications it wouldn't make a bad cage.

The cage is definitely workable as Luis said. However in my opinion, it will be much easier on you the keeper, to purchase a regular full screen cage. Even with a screen door, there will still be many issues with the remaining glass sides, thats not to say that it cannot be done, it simply means that it is more of a challenge to use. Especially if this is will be your first chameleon.

The cage you have setup now looks awesome! If i were you i may consider looking into getting another setup that fits a chameleons needs and keeping the one you have setup the way it is. LLLreptile has some very decent deals on starter kits for cham!

This cage would be great for a young panther or veiled 3-6 months. It would probably be better for the animals you are keeping now and better for your future addition to start off right! Just my 2 sense. Good luck

I completely agree with cushchameleon. It is a workable set up if you modified it, but for a first timer a screen is just sooooo much easier. No need to worry about ventilation, the cage getting too hot, or too humid. I just suggest going to any of the site sponsors and looking around, and screameleons has a nice starter set with purchase of a chameleon from there. That's a win-win. A great set up and beautiful new pal!
