Does anybody know anyone or is giving away a cage and all the stuff for a chameleon? I want to get my baby chameleon but spending 350 is way out of the question! because when i try and order a complete set up the shipping and handling kills me! I either need a really really cheap cage somewhere near southern california or a lovely Donation! please let me know.

have you tried craigslist or here on the forums here in the classifieds for cages for sale offered by members?

and live plants are pretty good deals in lowes and home depot,

the only expensive part might be the lighting fixures and bulbs that you can get a petsmart or petco, or online.

hope this helps

You just have to be ready and quick when it comes to craigslist... I got my light fixures for both of my cages for free along with a small screen cage I used when my chams were babies. I have gotten LOTS of 10 gallon tanks I use for my feeders for free... I also got lucky enough to find a 24x24x48 screen cage from LLL for only 20 dollars. I spent 100 on my first large cage so that was a HUGE savings. Another way to save some money is to go to your local Dollar Tree store, I got organic soil, smooth river rocks, and vines each item being only one dollar. :D I'm a huge savings freak, lol! It just takes time, patience, hope, and a bit of work. Good luck!

Consider a mesh cage instead of a screen cage to start. LLLReptiles has a 28x16x30 cage, which would be okay for a female adult and would be okay for a male for quite some time for under $30.

Also, check with the local reptile stores for "used" cages.

If you are in Walnut just take a drive to LLL Reptiles they are only an hour away from you. That way you don't have to worry about shipping if that is the kicker.

A word of advice as you'll be making a drive: call ahead to secure your order. The internet and the retail store are not one and the same and you cannot assume that what you see online is what you will find if you just drop in at the store. Call ahead, tell them what you want.

If you get a 38 gallon Reptarium to start with you can put the entire thing together for about $80. Remember to save some funds back in case you have to pay for a vet visit. Chameleons are not cheap.

I hate to be the voice of reason here, but if you can't afford to set the chameleon up, can you really afford to have a chameleon? Maybe it would be good to wait a while before you consider getting a cham. What happens if you get the chameleon you want, and it needs to see a vet? I have seen issues with chams run vet bills into the hundreds of dollars and that is not for major problems.

When i see someone needing help prior to getting a chameleon, I worry that they have no idea what amounts of money it costs to maintain a chameleon once you get it. Most people will tell you to have at least $300 set aside for a vet, BEFORE you even buy the chameleon. Can you make that kind of commitment to a chameleon? Just food for thought.

Not to be negative but PLEASE REALIZE CHAMELEONS ARE EXPENSIVE ANIMALS.

If you can not afford to give it proper care then perhaps you should not be getting a chameleon. I don't mean to be mean, just realistic.

Some examples:
His UVB bulb needs to be changed every 6 months. It will still give off light, it will "look" like its working but its not and NEEDS to be changed. If financially spending $30 on a new bulb is hard, you will convince yourself that the current one is working. This will lead to bad things.

Vet visits are expensive. You need exotic animal vets (most regular vets don't even know much about chameleons). $100+ if you need to go.

@panthercham. thank you. but where is the LLL Reptiles store at?

@prettyinink87 yeah im going to be getting anything i can from dollar tree. trust me lol

@elizadolots whats the difference between the mesh cage and screen cage?

@fredChameleon do you have any hints or tips where to get those supplies?

@Julirs yeah i already have money put aside for the vet visits and food. so i dont want to go in and take out that money.

@javsto yeah the lll reptiles is close i might think about that.

@LAURIE yeah ive saved up 500 dollars for vets and food just like a savings thing. but i just dont have enough money to be spending on the 380 dollar cages.

@ LAURIE okay so just wondering, can you give me some advice on how money you think i should have saved up before getting my chameleon just to be on the safe side?

I would be comfortable with having $300 for a vet and an extra $100 set aside for any needed supplies. Both of those amounts are after you have the complete cage set up and have purchased the chameleon.

@laurie really 400$ my friend said that he had a chameleon that got alittle sick and the vitamins and medications, and visit was like 630$

okay im ready to start. i got vet and food money. i just have to get a good cheap cage. and those are hard to find :/

Also, remember that chameleons are NOT a cheap reptile to keep, if money is an issue for you right now you might want to wait until you have enough money to properly care for it in the event of a needed vet trip or feeder hike. A misting system is also recommended for when your cham is an adult and those can run anywhere from 100 dollars to 200+ for a good one, like a Mist King. Looking for something that is "cheap" is not a good idea when it comes to chameleons. However, I agree that building your own cage might be cheaper.

i may be mistaken but feeder hike could be when the price of feeders goes up (likely due to the cricket virus)
