I Finally Bred Schistocerca shoeshone

Motherlode Chameleon

Chameleon Enthusiast
I have been feeding Schistocerca shoeshone to my chameleons for over 15 years now. However ironically I never until after moving off the Ranch had the facilities to attempt to bred this species. Now that I have got an aquarium room I was preparing for an attempt to breed these giant hoppers a year ago. However I housed two species together as I was still putting together the grasshopper cages and my Schistocrca nites (Gray Bird Hoppers) colony ate my Schistocerce shoeshone (Green Birds Hoppers) colony. Finally after waiting another year I had my opportunity to breed this species again and after 3-3.5 months of incubation the Green Bird Hoppers eggs have started to hatch. Here's some pictures.:D:D

Just to give you an idea how big these hoppers are.

Your bigger chameleons must love that lunch. I would try them if they were available around here. Congrats on your breeding success.

Congratulations! I always see hoppers around here that look like the nymphs, but never any the size of those adults!

Thanks everybody!! I have got to work out a couple details with the Agriculture Department. Then once the formalities are out of the way I'm going to attempt to put something together with Brad for the site here. They really eat almost everything that is green. I feed these to everyone who can fit one in their mouth.

Here's a picture of Rhino.

Pretty cool. So it takes almost 4 months for them to hatch? How many eggs do they lay? Do you get thousands?

Thank you. Ive been catching those for yrs but couldnt ever formally Id them. My crew loves them, even the pickiest eatters will attack those with gusto. Big Kudos for breeding them I can only imagine how much work that was.

Great job and thanks for sharing! I would love to be able to offer these to my chams. I would love to know more about how you accomplished it all!

how safe would it be for my chams if i just go out to a field and catch a bunch of these little buggers and put them in there own breeding tank? would they get rid of any pesticides if they were exposed to them or not? that is my only worry about wild bugs

if your wondering here in london we have these grass hoppers by the thousands all over atleast they look the same some are a littl different coloured i guess like black lines on there legs i think

yep just googled i feel stupid now lol there nothing alike in colour at all but the question now is how are the grass hoppers for chamsor are they the samething?

I'm not clear on what exactly you are asking? If your wondering if grasshoppers are safe to feed? Post a picture of the Grasshopper you are asking about.
