I’m worried my chameleon won’t find its food...

I recently got a 3 month old veiled chameleon and heard you can just drop a few calcium-covered crickets in their enclosure and they would hunt them down. I did this on the first day, and got worried he didn’t find any (as I didn’t see him eat one yet), so I carefully placed a new one right in front of him and he ate it. The next day I put 4 more in his enclosure, and again, got worried he wouldn’t find them. So I hand fed him a wax worm and 3 crickets. Later, he found one while I was watching, and ate that one. I tried getting a cup on the side of the cage, but he didn’t find the crickets in there and they died. I tried putting the cup in front of him, and he didn’t bother. So should I stick to hand feeding as that’s the only way he will eat while I can know he is eating? Or is there a way I can get him to cup feed?
