Hi Everyone,

Chameleon Info:

Your Chameleon - Veil, Female, approximately 7 months. How long has it been in your care? (approx . 6 months)

Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon? Never, she gapes and hisses, only until recently am I thinking she may let me handle her because of her lethargy.

How often and how long to you mist? Morning and night for at least 3 minutes. I mist the live plants thoroughly and then finally "Hyde" for about 5-10 seconds. She normally scampers off.
Do you see your chameleon drinking? I've never seen a Chameleon dring. When she was younger she would eat the leaves of the plant occasionally.

Fecal Description -
Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Better again, dark torpedoes and it appears she is urinating again, whitish/yellowish.

Location - Where are you geographically located? Long Island , NY

Current Problem - The current problem you are concerned about. See below

I've posted twice going back about two weeks ago. Our Chameleon is a female Veil. Born in April of 2012. We've had her since she was about 4 weeks old.
She had been doing fantastic, growing at very fast rate. Was using pee cal powder, crickets & super worms. about a month ago, she started showing signs of being ready to lay eggs, bottom of enclosure, pulling on screen, slowed appetite if any at all.
I placed a tub of moistened top soil, with small plant. dug small hole. Its been 3 weeks alltogether and as far as I know still no eggs.
My concerns are, she doesn't appear to be interested in crickets at all anymore, unless she is eating them when I am not looking. there are still a lot in enclosure. Secondly, she eats maybe two superworms a day now. But I have to hold them right under her face. On several occasions, she is about to hit worm, turns at last second and hits my thumb. turns her head and goes back to just hanging out.
She still visits bottom of enclosure, and still claws screen. I am befuddled. Anyone have any thoughts. I will add pics tonight. At work right now. This shot is at about 4 months old.
Lou

PS: She has not Shed in quite a while , at least 4, maybe 5 weeks

Hi! I think it would be very helpful if you'd fill out this form https://www.chameleonforums.com/how-ask-help-66/ and post a recent picture please :)

Do you only feed crickets and supers? She may be bored and could benefit from a bit more variety. Roaches, silkworms, hornworms, butterworms, locust, grasshoppers are good choices. All well gutloaded of course. I don't know the supplement you are using, is it plain or does it contain d3 and othe vits? You should be using plain calcium each feeding, d3 and multi twice a month. Achieving a balance is important so she doesn't get mbd.

I'm not sure she has eggs, she looks very young in the photo! However, a more up to date one could change my opinion. At this age you would want to help reduce the chances of her making infertile eggs. If you keep her temps in the low 80's and feed her 2-3 bugs a day it'll help her. Egg production takes a lot out of them and if they have a lot of big clutches it can shorten their life so you want to try and keep it down as much as you can. Whether she's gravid just now or not, this blog is a great read https://www.chameleonforums.com/blogs/jannb/345-egg-laying-laying-bin.html

Hope this is helpful :)

Gutloading is feeding the insects a nutritious meal before you feed the insects to your Cham. It's so important to get vital vits into her. Here's a great blog on gutloading and nutrition https://www.chameleonforums.com/blogs/sandrachameleon/. Since she's a veiled she might enjoy some of the fruit and veg directly.

Can you please check your calcium and see what's in it? I can't find any info about what's in it.

This forum recommends a 12 hour light on time, I see you have them on for a bit longer, this could mean she's not getting enough sleep at nights.

The high temps and food intake could mean she has eggs.

Also, having the fans and heating near her house could be messing up her temperature gradient. It's important that she has warm and cool areas so she can regulate her body temp.

Calcium 0% D3, was giving Calcium with Vit D3

My guess, based on the pictures is that she's got eggs. You need to give her some privacy for her to be comfortable laying. It might be a good idea to wrap newspaper around the bottom of the cage (you can poke a spy hole in) so she feels like she's not being watched.

Not really, here are some shots from a few minutes ago......hope this helps a little

WOW! What a big beautiful girl! I would say that yes she does have eggs! If you read through that link I gave you on laying bins it should help you :)

Good luck! Please let us know how you guys get on!

I use a t5 strip light in a reflector. Those spiral bulbs get a bad rap because there was a fault with them years ago but I think they're ok now :)

From the pictures she does look tubby and she could have eggs. The only way to know for sure would be an X-ray. If she is roaming a lot and not eating she could have eggs. My girls normally laid in the late afternoon and evening and sometime even stayed in the hole overnight and finished the next morning. I would recommend putting her in a large trash can laying bin with no way out. Just have a short little branch that she can sit on up out of the sand. Put her in about 3 or 4:00 and see if she will start digging within a few hours. If she doesn't I would take her back out and try again tomorrow. The sand needs to be moist. When you pick up a handful and squeeze it you should be able to only get a tiny drop or two of water out. I also dig a started hole for my girls and they would often use it. If she doesn't lay in the next day or two I would take her to a good reptile vet, one with chameleon experience if possible. Once they start getting weak they would not be able to lay.

Jannb,
Do you recommend using pure sand, soil sand mix, and if so what ratio.

She sure has a belly full of eggs. Has she laid them yet? It looks like she is ready to go.

if she has laid them , I can't locate them. and she does look like she lost weight. I have to set up my gram scale and weigh her. it's tricky though. She still a little funny about coming to me.

Im going to set up a bigger laiden bin for her with sand only . . . . . . . .

If she's allot smaller she might have laid. Did she have sand/dirt on her? Is she eating and drinking now? They normally lay the eggs on the very bottom up against the edge of the container.

Jannb,
I am setting up a sand laying bin today for her. I do not believe she has dropped the eggs as of yet.
She is eating, that I know of for sure, 1 -2 super worms per day(i still don't think she is touching crickets), at least one with calcium dust. Still not veracious like she was though.

All Lighting is brand new. So I know that is good. I cut lighting back to ~ 11.5/12 hrs.
She is still free roaming, but not as much at bottom.
I have no idea how to tell if she is drinking water or not. I am misting her at least 3x/day, for at least 3-4 minutes each time.

I am taking her to vet tomorrow. I don't think I have a choice.
I will keep u posted.
Lou
