IMO its kind something you have to play with...I bought a hydrometer and i have a constant 40-50 % humidity when I mist it will go up to 60's for a good half hour once the water dries up. I dont know if this helps but LLL.reptile has a once hydrometer/thermometer at a decent price

Honestly humidity is not something I really worry about with the veileds.
In their natural environment they live in a fairly wide range of conditions.
More important to make sure they have access to clean drinking water (dripper, multiple mistings per day or a misting system).
I don't measure humidity in the veiled enclosures.
I do have hygrometers in the pygmy enclosures.

What about panthers? What is the optimal range for them?

I keep my guy in a range of 35%-55%, most of the time around 40%, but up to 55% during sheds. I use a vicks humidifier, a mistking and a homemade dripper fountain pump style. It works well for me and Dante, but in no way is my set-up perfect yet; it's all a learning experience .
Brad, I know that they live in a very wide range of climates/conditions, but too low could be harmful, right?
Before I got the humidifier normal relative humidity was around 20%-25% humidity. It seemed too low to me. He drank a ton during hand mistings (basking temp ~88-90 fyi), and that was with a dripper running 30 min, four times a day. I know after I had added the humidifier, kept ~40%, he drank to his satisfaction quicker than when when it was in the 20s%. His sheds also seemed easier, in that there wasn't as many little pieces that took longer to shed away. I do agree that if you mist religiously or have a system and have a dripper there isn't as much need to regulate the humidity. I just went ahead and bought the humidifier since I'm moving to AZ in a few weeks and know I'm going to need it there. Plus my gecko's humidity needed to be bumped up about 30%, so it's piped to both cages and works quite well, still need to get a better timer tho. Just my $.02

Typically its 50% in the room in which my panthers are housed, though it can range from 35-60% in Winter and 40-75% in Summer. I also ensure there is water dripping every morning, with misting and dripping in the late afternoon.

In long beach, I would gues your indoor humidity is probably right at 50% which is really typical for mild climates in Cal.
I think thats a decent low for a panther, plants in the enclosure will raise it and misting will bring it up too. I don't think humidity will be a significant issue for you unless you run the heater a lot.
I like to keep my youngins at 60%+ right above the cage, inside it is probably 10% or more higher.

The humidity really bumps up here at night especially. I don't live right next to the beach but I am still more than close enough to enjoy the good temperatures. So the heater rarely runs here.
Keeping the range from 40-60%+ should be easy now that I think about it. Thanks Kevin!
