humidity question

hey everyone my name is Andrew pretty new to the forum and chameleons.... i have a veiled cham about 3 months now and he seems happy but i live in vegas and its hard to keep humidty in his cage....
i need some help i know everyone hates substraight and glass but it seems like ther is no other choice.....is there anyway to keep the humidity up without running a mister all the time????
 
i know live plants and lots of them but its hard there is anwhere from 3 to 10 humidty in the room i keep him during a normal day so when i get my new cage should i get a glass or screen or maybe spend a little leg work and make one with both????
 
Try a humidifier. Just run the out put thingy right into the cage. keep an eye on the humidity gauge and make sure its not too moist as that can cause other problems.
 
hey thanks for the quick post you guys but the humdify i looked into and i have one it just seems to put out extremely hot air and water could this hurt my buddy? And unfortunatly you are all going to hate me but i got him from petco cause i didnt want to ship the little guy and couldnt find any local breeders but i know of some know duh feel stupid lol
 
ok that will probably do the trick but one question without a new thread how heavy a sleep is chams cause he gave me a little scare and wouldnt wake up cause i had to move his cage :(
 
Really depends on the cham. We have some that will sleep through anything, as well as a few that are super light sleepers.
 
well he is shedding right now started at about 4 o clock he is a male veiled cham and we left him on a fake lily plant and he fell asleep well it took me to dumping water on him to wake up and it bothered me cause i was away from home for a while like a couple of days and my girlfriend forgot to clean the cage and some mokd and poop was in there im cleaning it tom and new sunstraight tom as well could this hurt him????

I definitely would never dump water on my cham, think about if it happened to you...yikes, I know I would be mad. It generally is not a good idea to wake them. Why did you need to? Also, what is sunstraight? Do you mean substrate? If so, I suggest removing that from his enclosure.
 
well sorry im sometimes use to broad of words i ran him under the sink faucet with little water so he would feel something cause i left him on a plant and he fell asleep and i didnt want him there overnight and he wouldnt let go and he usely gets right up and climbs onto me. and sorry yes i meant substraught lol im typing in the dark lol why is it so bad to have it???
 
It shouldn't take splashing him with water to wake him up.

During my big cage move, I had to move Chameleo in his sleep. I just turned on the lights, and kind of rocked his plant a little bit until his eye opened. I gave him a few minutes to take in what was happening, then slowly picked him up.

How long did you give your chameleon before you decided to splash it with water?

Why was he not in his cage? Does he have one? Why cant you keep humidity? What does it look like? Does it have enough live plants?

Does the humidity meter tell you its 3-10% or is this just the room humidity? There are big differences between both usually.

If he was dead, he wouldn't be on the plant, tail happily curled up, with a firm grip.

Sounds like you might have alot of basic questions about husbandry.

I would read that over. It is both very short and informative. Usually this guide answers most questions, while providing good overall care information. I bet you'll have alot less questions after reading that.
 
all ready read it like four or five times lol but it just seemed not like him he loves to be handled and hang around even loves to take rides in the car lol i know yell at me and stuff but he likes it lol it just seemed odd cause it has never happened before and from reading the firum they seem to be creatures of habit and when something changes you might have a problem on your hands or i can just be a worry wort

Oh help! They DO NOT like car rides, nor do they like to be handled alot (or at all) especially at this age. You are risking stressing your chameleon to DEATH. Why did you not get a bearded dragon if you wanted to handle something so much? Just because he is not trying to run does not mean he is stressed or fearing for his life. With him not waking up it sounds as if his health is already compromised. If you have read the Kitty blog and care instructions and are doing everything right, perhaps you could show us your perfect husbandry by filling out this form???
Cage Info:
Cage Type - Describe your cage (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions?
Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule?
Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps?
Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity?
Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind?
Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor?
Location - Where are you geographically located?

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - The species, sex, and age of your chameleon. How long has it been in your care?
Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon?
Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders?
Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule?
Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking?
Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites?
History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you.
Current Problem - The current problem that you are concerned about.
 
i never called it perfect and doesnt get that stress from car rides not like im taking him every day he just doesnt react to the rides when i go to the store

Cage Type - he is still young so i use a terrarium for now building a bigger cage and moving him in a month or two
Lighting - reptisun 5.0 and a daytime basking light and a 40w night to keep the temp
Temperature - day around 85 night about 70 to 75
Humidity - from 55 to 70 55 only when i come around to respray and i spray water 3 to 4 times a day
Plants - fake plants for now have live ones for bigger cage but not used right now
Placement - table in the bedroom low traffic mostly in morning and night but very little noise during day
Location - sin city

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - veiled male
Handling - 3 to4 times a week
Feeding - crickets and mealworms and waxworms as many as he eats in about 5 mins and i let a couple of crickets around when i leave
Supplements - calicum with d3 and without out twice a week
Watering - drip system and hand sprayer
Fecal Description - black with white top portion appears to be mormal compared to other photos ive seen.

OK-thanks for the info. A few tweaks will be needed. What is the night bulb and does it get cold enough to drop your night temps below 70 without the night bulb? I don't think you need to worry about humidity. Make sure you have a digital thermometer with a probe to measure temps-analog dial style thermometers are junk-as are analog hygrometers. Mealwoms and waxworms are terrible feeders. Waxworms are good for occasional treats-no more than 1-2 weekly, Mealworms are horrible and shouldn't be fed. Superworms are good, silkworms, hornworms, and of course well gutloaded crickets. You should be dusting one feeding 6X weekly with calcium without D3, and 2-3X monthly replace one of those dustings with the calcium with D3. Minimize the handling and you should be OK. Get a screen cage ASAP.
