how to tell male or female with jacksons

NW chameleon

New Member
Hi I have a jacksons chameleon I got from petsmart about a month ago he/she seems to be in good health but was wondering the sex. I was told it was a male at the store but am not sure I have been noticing lately that he/she has been walking around at the base of the cage lately and was wondering if it might be a female looking for a place to ley eggs. I know with veiled chameleons you can tell by the spur on the foot, but I dont know if it is the same for jacksons. Is there a way to tell? Here are a couple pics but im not sure if they will help.

The pet store is correct and that is a male Jackson’s Chameleon. (Trioceros jacksonii xantholophus) and you can tell by the presence of the three horns. Females of this species have none or only small horns. Jackson’s Chameleons do not have the tell-tale tarsal spur indicating sex. There are only a few species that actually have that and need to be sexed by other external means and visual cues.

As for why he is going to the bottom of the cage I don’t know as it could be many factors but perhaps he is starting to feel more comfortable in your presence (you’ve only had him a month) and is exploring is cage more. Further, female Jackson’s Chameleons don’t lay eggs but, in fact, give live birth.
