How to tell if he's comfortable enough to be handled?

I have owned this veiled chameleon for three or four days, and when I used to stick my hand ANYWHERE close to him, he'd puff up and turn black super quick.

(this was him the first day I got him, he's puffy and mad. This was also before I made improvements to his cage like adding the ficus, getting rid of the substrate entirely, ect. This was taken right before he turned black lol http://s993.beta.photobucket.com/user/aurawave/media/IMG_0409_zps17ece12f.jpg.html?sort=3&o=8)

(This was today after I closed his cage. He wasn't puffy or mad at all. I took it after I closed the cage door. http://s993.beta.photobucket.com/user/aurawave/media/IMG_0433_zps1d1ffba3.jpg.html)

Today I put some crickets in the cage onto the water bottle he eats from and he didn't seem upset at all. He puffed up his chin a little bit, but he stayed green and didn't back away.

I understand I should NOT try and handle the little guy more than three times a week and also associate my hands with food and outdoor basking, but I'm too afraid of him.

I 'rescued' him from petco, and he's in a much bigger cage (it's still a small cage, but it's much bigger than what they kept him in) and he used to have MBD and broken bones. Much better now. I stick my hands in the cage ONLY to feed and mist the leaves on his ficus tree, and once to get rid of the substrate I foolishly put in there the first day.

I've also heard that veileds are definitely more aggro than most chams, and that if you never handle them they will ALWAYS be aggro towards you, and I don't want that.

I'm not looking to pester the little guy, I just want him to be somewhat comfy around me and not be scared. It seems like he's warming up, but I'm too scared to touch him.

Should I wait a few days/weeks, or shall I attempt to handle him sooner?

(I know how you're not supposed to touch his back, and only to approach him from below eye level. I've been doing these things every day when I feed/mist /water/whatever him and he seems to be warming up)

Opinions?

I'm new here so sorry if this is in the wrong section. Thanks.

give him some time to settle in. you can try handfeeding him so that he gets used to you and your hand in his cage. even the most aggressive chams can be handled but it takes time and patience on your part.

one trick that I use when a cham is aggressive or shy is to make him concentrate on one hand and while he's paying attention to the one hand, slowly slide your free hand under his front legs.

keep us updated and enjoy your new cham! :)

Thanks! I will try and handfeed him since he is comfortable with my hands in/around his territory anyway.

I've heard about that trick.

I will, thank you!
