Hornworm soil for pupate

So, I have a couple hornworms that are ready to burrow themselves into soil, can I use some from outside or is that a no go? Should I get some from outside or a bag of some from walmart or something?

I would go with a bag of soil. I would worry about introducing some kind of parasite through soil from outside. If you’re bioactive, throw those suckers in the enclosure at night. The chameleon won’t eat them, and they’ll hatch in a couple weeks!

Hornworms are a relatively new member on the list of cultivated bugs. In nature they just dig in to the dirt and pupate. I bet we have not thinned out the gene pool of the captive bread bush to such a place where they could not return to nature and be fine!
