Hornworm breeding

Hey guys, I had a questions... My hornworms are almost done pupating and wanted to know two things.

1) how long does it take for them to turn into moths.
2) do I need a tomato plant? or will they lay eggs without it.

Depending on your heat, 18 days is what I hear. Also, place the tomato plant outside of the cage, so they lay eggs on a different non-toxic plant.
