i've had the worst time raising feeder insects in the past (crickets and superworms) but for the last month or so I've been working on hornworms and this morning my first batch of eggs from my first batch of moths finally hatched, i'm so excited!
i basically followed the instructions provided here
https://www.chameleonforums.com/blogs/pigglett79/720-came-first-hornworm-egg.html
so i thought i would plug them for anyone else who might be thinking about this.
i did make a modification to the moth housing set up however which i think is a lot easier than using a cage with screen sides, especially if you don't have an extra sitting around. i purchased a big (like 14" wide by three feet long and 2 feet tall) clear rubbermaid tub at walmart, cut windows out of the lid and hot glued pieces of screen over them. having the solid sides was really nice because when the moths came out of their pupas and started spraying urates and whatever else all over the place, the mess stayed in the box instead of going out the walls of a screen cage. I also couldn't find any tomato plants to put in there for the moths to lay eggs upon because it was christmas so I just took some dead sticks from the back yard and they used those instead.
good luck to anyone else thinking about raising their own!
