Are the spikes on horned worms a potentail danger? Could they puncture internal organs?

First time I saw a pic of a hornworm, I wondered, why would anyone want to feed those spiky rhino's to a cham 
In pics, they do look deadly, but the horn is just part of their skin, I guess its just for show. Cant think of any other use for it.
