i just ordered a 2 gallon hibiscus offline and i was just wondering would replacing the soil with play sand allow the plant to survive?

I just wanted to say my hibiscus died in about 2 weeks in my enclosure. Well, it dropped ALL leaves. They really don't fair well in their environment.

I would only put a layer of playsand at the bottom. You could also make a mixture of soil and sand. The soil will provide some nutrition for the plant. I do not think that it would survive in sand alone. Rotating hibiscus in the sun is also a good way to keep it alive. One in and one out. But you are in Chicago so that maynot work for you now during fall and winter.

yea, as long as you have a uvb light, they will do fine, i wouldn't repot them to take the risk of them surviving or not. i have had some die when repotted and others do fine.

if your worried about the soil i would just cover the soil with river rocks so your chams can't get to it.

the biggest tip of all is getting 2 or 3 of them at a time. and rotating them out into natural sunlight every 3-4 weeks. its a lot of work but those flowers look crazzyyyy!!

when you repot you will have a 2 week period were the plant will be in shock, it is best that when you get it , keep it in what ever setting the plant needs in order to recover faster.

i think you said you bought two? switch them out maybe every 2-3 weeks. let them get sunlight.

they don't fair well in housing that is dark. need alot of sun, good amount coming in for about half the day.. high temps shouldn't be over about 90..but a well established plant will survive HI temps into the 100's.
