hi! im new!

Hi Brian! Welcome to the forum :D

Your Jackson is one good looking boy! I have a thing for horns lol ;) I see you are getting bombarded with great info but I just wanted to share one of my favorite articles about Jackson Chameleons, not only does it go over the basic care and breeding but it also goes over the different sub species and where they are native! I just find it interesting http://www.chameleonnews.com/10JulManchen.html

Good luck with your boy and possible new female :D

Im new as well. I got a Ambanja Panther Chameleon. His name is pluto. He's about 3 months old. I love him. Still have a couple questions tho. What kind of fruits and veggies work? Carrots? apples? pineapple? also do i need to watch anything in particular in these first few months? poop? eating? I have him on a 12on 12 off lighting pattern with the double in one UV/basking light. I put about 6 crickets a day in. Mist a few times a day and have a dripper. he sleeps like a rock when lights out. :) he's fun to play with. Would you suggest a reptile hammock closer to the light or is the vine good? Sorry so many Q's, im just super stoked.

you definitely could use some more vines and branches both vertical and horizontally. Some more foilage would not hurt too. I would raise the basking branch up some so it about 8 inches below the light. It looks kinda far down. 6 crickets a day is not near enough for a 3 month old. 15-20 crickets per day. Also when you asked about fruits and veggies, you mean for your crickets to eat or your chameleon? Most panthers do not eat any furits or vegetables as opposed to the Veilds who do eat some. Carrots the pineapple(which I am not sure of) would be ok for gutoad along with other dark leafy greens.. Also substrate is frowned upon as your chameleon could injest it and become ill or die not to mention the bacteria that will grow from it gettting wet. I would remove that and leave the cage floor bare.

ok...aside from basic info...anyone have answers...

sure do ask away!!! most people will just post up a blog with info i prefer to answer with what i know and can help with if you don't have a thread shoot me a pm and i'll answer the best i can.

Wow. 5 pages one day. Is that a record? :)

maybe!!! but from my experience with jacksons seeing your guy is little and putting in a female is a bad idea for now cause it won't stress the male out but the female will. males are horny and will try to play bump bump but seeing he is little and if you add another youngin she can some what ward him off I've seen this first hand. i've haid jacksons paired together and they did fine. but if you plan on breeding keep them in seperate cages. I kept my two jacksons together and was wondering why they never breed. this was because after a while they will think each other as the same and won't have any intrest in breeding with each other. so if you want keep them in seperate cages and out of site and if you want to breed do it after they are both a little over a year that way you know all their baby making parts are mature and in working order. but keep an eye on them cause if she is receptive after the mating is done she might get aggressiive towards him and then they will need to be seperated. I've never seena female jacksons get aggresive but there is always a first for everything. best of luck and you can keep chams together i got a pair of nosey be's and female veileds housed together and they are doing awesome just a little experiement im tryin heard about it and decided to do it and both paris are living harmoniously together even k.multi's are known to live good together as females seeco told me!!!

Cool i thought that he was maybe needing more crickets. Im goin ti but some vines and braches today. So you beleive that the substrate(mulch right?lol) is bad? i thought it was good to catch poop and in case he falls....

great set up, good lookin lil male jacko...so as for breeding, or keeping pairs..ive done it many times over many years, i usually kept trios together 1 male to 2 females (nice! :D, living good) however, i kept my chams in a walk in closet, so it was quite large and i was able to provide three bascking sites and four large (very long) uvb bulbs along the ceiling..i got numourus "drops" from my females, and they usually pop out around 11-20 babies at a time..thats where it got expensive (separate caging fully set up, and lots of real small feeders) and time consuming..if you arent on top of those babies all day everyday untill they are 2 months they will die off.. but looks like you are doing good!:D

Well thanks for the good input. I talked to the breeder and picked a young female. She is probably 3going months younger them him and is a good size difference. He was defensive at first buy now are doing there own thing. She has already eaten and drank. Wish me luck!!

Your plants and the cage floor will catch the poop.
We do not recommend substrate because if they ingest it, whether accidently when a feeder bug gets in it, or on purpose (they have been known to eat non food items) it can cause impaction.

I would recommend starting a new thread, and filling out the how to ask for help form, just so we can make any suggestions on your husbandry.

well ill fix the cage floor tomorrow but about the thread. I cant really start a new thread. I had an infraction so i kinda have to ask my questions on other ppls threads. sux i know.

They seem to be doing ok together now..here is hoping!

You really need separate enclosures, especially since she's so much younger than your male. Of course they are doing fine now because they are both young. But your male will be ready to breed soon, and she won't. He's going to harass her and probably succeed at breeding with her way before she's ready, and that will be very dangerous and detrimental to her health. Please separate them. It is really not ok to put more than one cham in a cage. People who keeps them together successfully tend to do it in a space much larger, like a room.

If you are going to keep them together temporarily, at the least, they need separate basking sites and plenty of foliage for the female to hide from the male.

Welcome to the forum! I started off with a male Jackson's, he was a fantastic chameleon with a really lovely personality.

The cage looks awesome! I'm really impressed, you really did your research and built him a great cage. They're both really cute, I love your new little female.

I am also concerned about her being much younger than him, though. I know it probably seems like "damn, all these crazy internet people are telling me I have to build a SECOND cage? You've gotta be kidding me" but it's true, unfortunately, it's going to be better for both your guys to be separate while they both reach adult size. Let them both reach their full adult potential before you think about breeding them. And by then you can build them a big beautiful cage and keep them together like that if you want. But for right now, please heed our concerns. It would be a shame to lose her soon. You'd be horrified how quickly chameleons can die from stress - in a matter of days sometimes.

Nice cage! You are much braver than me! 2 days and already having the possibility of breeding. I wish you good luck.
I just went through my first laying clutch with my female and I was stressed even though they are not fertile.

I guess I just need time to make sure everything is right to keep vet bills down:)
Vet bills, hate those things. The more pets you have the more they multiply.

One has an issue and next thing you know they all have different issues.

Is that plastic for the screening? Like the chicken fence?

Well I guess ill take my chances with the female. Both chams used to housed in groups and both seem to be doing well. There is tons of space in the cage and plenty of hiding and heating areas. I do appreciate the concern and have been keeping a close eye on then. I have had him for about a month now and her for two days.
