I took my veiled chameleon to the vet today who is someone who sees reptiles but obviously not veiled chameleons. I have had this chameleon 12 days. Yes I got him from a pet store but he was very active, eating, drinking etc. Past few days he has had one eye closed (vet gave him drops to put in/on his eye every 12 hours). Plus he's not moving around much and I have not seen him eat or drink. I started spraying him and his cage with warm water a few times a day. He opens his mouth several times a day too. Vet really had no idea why he's not eating. He did say his stomach seemed fine (he looked when George, my chameleon, opened his mouth). George only weighs 8.5 grams and he's supposed to be about 2 months old. He's been eating crickets dusted with calcium with D3 which I have been doing every other day. Also have vitamin A drops which I put on meals worms although he has not eaten any of them. I am really concerned he's not drinking and may be dehydrated so I drop water on his mouth but how often should I do this and should I do this?? I have read anything and everything and there is so much variables in temps, humidity, what to do and what not to do. Please help!
His home is glass with screened top. I used this because he is so small and my other screened cage is huge! I plan to switch him when he's bigger if he lives.
Ok, he has several different things to climb on. Some vines, wood, plastic flowers (although I took them out because I thought maybe he scratched his eye on one). His basking area is a hammock type thing which he seems to like. The temp in this area is about 80-85 degrees. The humidity is around 60%. The center of the cage is around 75 and the bottom 70 degrees. I had the humidity up to 75% but lowered it a few days ago because I read lowering it might encourage him to drink. I have a temperture and humidity controller so it stays about the same temp and humidity during the day. I have the controller set to drop 10 degrees at night although I don't use a heating light at night (I don't have any lights on at night). I have a UVB light and heat light for the day time. The heat light is about 10 inches above the basking area. The humidity is from a repti fogger attached to the top of the cage. I do have a dripper which is the plant style so it drips down three leaves into a bowl. I have seen him drink from this when I first got him but not lately which is why I am spraying him. I did try dangling a cricket and a meal worm in front of him to see if he would eat. He opened his mouth but did not try to take either and did not stick his tongue out. I had to put my last veiled chameleon down because it was much older than I was told and it turned out to be a female and not a male as I was told although I knew this pretty quick after I got her. She wasn't 2 months as I was told and vet told me she was 1-2 years when I had to put her down. I had her 5 months. I never thought she would get egg bound (which is what vet thought happened) that young. So I made sure this one was a male after I did a LOT of research as I wanted to make sure I was doing everything right. Now this one is sick or not eating anyway. What am I doing wrong and how do I help him. There aren't any vets for hours around here that really know what they are doing. I thought this one did but he admitted he doesn't know chameleons that well. Neither did the vet that I took my last one too and they are the emegency vets at the local (2 hours away) university has a program for vets! Any ideas on how to get him to eat and drink would be greatly appreciated!! I am afraid I'll lose him in the next day or two if he won't eat. Thank you!!
