I took my veiled chameleon to the vet today who is someone who sees reptiles but obviously not veiled chameleons. I have had this chameleon 12 days. Yes I got him from a pet store but he was very active, eating, drinking etc. Past few days he has had one eye closed (vet gave him drops to put in/on his eye every 12 hours). Plus he's not moving around much and I have not seen him eat or drink. I started spraying him and his cage with warm water a few times a day. He opens his mouth several times a day too. Vet really had no idea why he's not eating. He did say his stomach seemed fine (he looked when George, my chameleon, opened his mouth). George only weighs 8.5 grams and he's supposed to be about 2 months old. He's been eating crickets dusted with calcium with D3 which I have been doing every other day. Also have vitamin A drops which I put on meals worms although he has not eaten any of them. I am really concerned he's not drinking and may be dehydrated so I drop water on his mouth but how often should I do this and should I do this?? I have read anything and everything and there is so much variables in temps, humidity, what to do and what not to do. Please help!

His home is glass with screened top. I used this because he is so small and my other screened cage is huge! I plan to switch him when he's bigger if he lives. :( Ok, he has several different things to climb on. Some vines, wood, plastic flowers (although I took them out because I thought maybe he scratched his eye on one). His basking area is a hammock type thing which he seems to like. The temp in this area is about 80-85 degrees. The humidity is around 60%. The center of the cage is around 75 and the bottom 70 degrees. I had the humidity up to 75% but lowered it a few days ago because I read lowering it might encourage him to drink. I have a temperture and humidity controller so it stays about the same temp and humidity during the day. I have the controller set to drop 10 degrees at night although I don't use a heating light at night (I don't have any lights on at night). I have a UVB light and heat light for the day time. The heat light is about 10 inches above the basking area. The humidity is from a repti fogger attached to the top of the cage. I do have a dripper which is the plant style so it drips down three leaves into a bowl. I have seen him drink from this when I first got him but not lately which is why I am spraying him. I did try dangling a cricket and a meal worm in front of him to see if he would eat. He opened his mouth but did not try to take either and did not stick his tongue out. I had to put my last veiled chameleon down because it was much older than I was told and it turned out to be a female and not a male as I was told although I knew this pretty quick after I got her. She wasn't 2 months as I was told and vet told me she was 1-2 years when I had to put her down. I had her 5 months. I never thought she would get egg bound (which is what vet thought happened) that young. So I made sure this one was a male after I did a LOT of research as I wanted to make sure I was doing everything right. Now this one is sick or not eating anyway. What am I doing wrong and how do I help him. There aren't any vets for hours around here that really know what they are doing. I thought this one did but he admitted he doesn't know chameleons that well. Neither did the vet that I took my last one too and they are the emegency vets at the local (2 hours away) university has a program for vets! Any ideas on how to get him to eat and drink would be greatly appreciated!! I am afraid I'll lose him in the next day or two if he won't eat. Thank you!!

I am sorry to hear that George is not doing well. What size feeders are you feeding him? If they are to big he want eat them. What kind of (brand) UV light do you have? How are you measuring your temps? What's the name of the meds the vet gave you for his eyes? Chameleons especially babies can be hard to keep. You have to get their environment just perfect for them to be healthy. I see a few things you need to correct in the way you are keeping George. Please check out the info below. I'm attaching my blog for how I have had success keeping young veileds.

Help

I am using a National Geographic self-ballasted lamp SMR 13 UVB 5.0. I think I got the SMR correct. It's so small, I can barely see it with my glasses on. The crickets are small. Most are smaller than the space between his eyes. A few might be a bit bigger. The meal worms are small also. I measure the temps with three stick on temperature and humidity guages and I have a zoo med hydrotherm humidity temperature contoller. I have the internal sensor in the basking area now to measure that temp. I had it in the middle of the cage at first. The medicine the vet gave me is Ofloxacin Ophthamalmic solution USP .3%. Directions - One drop every 12 hours.

Ok some other info - I've had this chameleon 12 days. He has been under the uvb bulb all day today (when I was not at the vets). He's scratching his eye that is closed. I haven't had a parasite test yet but have a container to get a sample to have it tested. The light fixtures are the dome type - one is a double dome with red night heat light (no longer using this light as I read they can see red lights) and white heat light from pet store. It's a 75watt. Tonight I put a few crickets in a feeding bowl along with the meal worms (which is where I have been putting them). The crickets were just running the cage because he seemed to like to hunt for them but I thought maybe with his right eye issue and keeping it closed that he can't find the crickets. I do gut load the crickets with store bought cricket food and carrots, apples, oranges, lettuce mix, field lettuce mix (store bought in grocery store) and broccoli. The cage is 18x18x36 inches and is sitting by a window (I keep shades closed as his cage is glass with screen top). The top of cage is about 5 feet off the floor. It's not in a high traffic area. I am trying to answer the questions in one of the posts but I can't remember it all so hopefully I covered them.

He was moving around his cage tonight (walked from basking area to where he sleeps). He scratched his eye against the vine and appeared to be licking his lips almost. I saw his tongue although it did not come out of his mouth.

I read that I should not give him calcium with D3 so I will stop that and get just calcium. Where is the best place to order food and suppliments? I need to order as there isn't any place around here to get anything other than meal worms and crickets. I have gotten stuff off of Amazon.com before for my other chameleon but prefer a reputable web site.

Again any help in how to get him drinking and eating would be great. I will post a picture of him tomorrow if I can figure out how. FYI his coloring seems fine. He's a light green most of the time although will change if in basking area and have blackish stripes or curves with dots and gets a little darker green. Thanks again!
